The New eBay Motors Scam

There's a new scam going around, which is a slightly more sophisticated variation of a fake escrow trick.

Scammers post for sale ads in classified services such as Craigslist or AutoTrader, with a too-good-to-be-true price. Here is one example I found: 2005 Honda Accord.

"Email me for more details : brendapharell@ymail.com .The car is in a perfect cosmetic and engine conditions, and meticulously maintained. No damage, no scratches or dents, no hidden defects, never been into accidents and it is as advertised. Email me for more pictures at : brendapharell@ymail.com . I cannot get in touch with you if you use the "Email this Seller" option because my email address on autotrader is full so please e-mail me directly at: brendapharell@ymail.com"
The car is a real car--in the sense that they borrowed some photos and a VIN from somewhere, so if you run it through CarFax it will check out as a real vehicle.

If you respond, they send you a fake invoice from eBay Motors, along with a fake "Vehicle Purchase Protection" service email.

Here are examples, cick for larger view:

It isn't a perfect fake, but it may be convincing to someone who doesn't know much about eBay. The real eBay Motors does not operate an escrow service, and they explicitly don't allow MoneyGram payments! Also note the fake eBay email address, "ebay@support-center-vpp.net".

The scammers want you to send a non-traceable payment (MoneyGram, Western Union) to a "payment agent", who is probably some idiot who signed up for a "work at home" job "processing internet payments". That guy cashes the payment, and forwards it on to the scammers.

I tried to make contact with the scammer, but he was being very careful--he wouldn't give me a phone number. He stopped respoding to my emails after I pointed out that eBay doesn't allow Moneygram payments, and asked if he could take a PayPal payment instead.

Update: I am starting to see reports of this scam spreading out into Canada and the UK, using other services such as Moneybookers. The rules are the same. If the price is too good to be true (way below market) or the guy wants you to buy a car without being able to look at it, it's not real.

Thanks for the information. I just recently ran across two of these scams over the past week on the Auto Trader. People out there need to beware of these scams! Is there any way to report the people trying to pull this off?

This scam preys on people who are willing to buy a car sight unseen, which can be risky. Before you buy a car, besides getting its vehicle history it’s a good idea to take a test drive and have it inspected by a mechanic. Mobile inspection services can do this for you if the car isn’t in your area.

They been running the TGTBT scam on eBay for a while now, though I have yet to see the price be the part that's Too Good. I typically see it under Triumphs, MGs and Jags from the 60s and 70s that are described as having "All electrics working!".

Right. Total scam.

I am currently in the market for a used car and ran across one of these scams for a 2004 volvo xc90 for something like $4500. The persons email address is hunterfelecia@ymail.com. Funny that the description is exacrtly the same hahaha. I knew it was a scam from the minute the person responded to me.

"Hi,
The car is located in Dallas(i just moved here with my new job),like i told we will use eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection,so we can both be protected and insured.I am waiting for you to pay them so i can start the shipping process and send the car at your place. As I have this agreement with eBay , I got a discount at shipping company that eBay works with and I can deliver the car anywhere in US.You will get the car and you will have 5 days of inspection in which you can decide if you keep it or not.If you won`t like my car(not your case)you notify eBay and you send the car back on my cost, after that eBay will send all your money back. The shipping is free i will take care of it and i will send the car with all the papers( vehicle registration, warranty papers, transfer papers etc ).Try to check your email(spam or bulk folder also),you should get the invoice soon.
Thanks"

Thats the response i got after emailing to ask for some more questions! haha! I am currently having some fun with this felicia hunter person. Ill let you know how it turns out.

The decision to streamline those tasks is related to the pain threshold of the business owner and to the need to improve the bottom line. Here's the e-mail I received after seeing a too good to be true ad on Auto Trader and inquiring about it.

"Hello, I'm Sgt. David Walcot.
This Highlander is in perfect working condition. This vehicle engine runs very very smooth. No electrical problems on this beauty.. This detailed vehicle makes the exterior looks like it just came off the assembly line. The car has 48,300 miles on it.
As I know that my current situation is pretty special I want the deal closed only through eBays's Buyer Protection Program in order for you to be 100% protected. You will make the payment to ebay and they will hold the money until you receive the car. ONLY AFTER you receive the car and you inspect it(for 15 days) eBay will release the payment to me; in this way we are both protected. I am located in Budapest, Hungary and I was sent here to improve the military relationships between USA and Hungary . One month ago, my wife Jannet moved here with me and brought the car with her, but now we have to sell it back in the US because we can't register it here, it has US specs and everything, and registering it here in Europe will take for ever. My price on it is US 6,500 $.
If we reach an agreement, I am willing to take care of the shipping to your address. Shipping will take 10 days maximum. I have managed to obtain a low cost shipping, only $600 and I presume it would be fair to split the shipping cost so, we'll pay $300 each. Meaning, that the car and the shipping/handling will cost you $6,800. I think this is reasonable.
Please get back to me asap if you decide to buy, and include in your e-mail your full name and address where you want it shipped so I can start the deal with eBay. You will receive all the transaction payment and shipping details from them.

Thank you"

Thanks a lot for posting this! I almost got suckered into the same scam. I noticed something was fishy when the scammer sent me the confirmation from ebay that was from "eBay@customer-transactions.com". I decided to do some research when I came upon your blog.

Autotrader needs to do something about this....

So, who can we report these scammers to?

The threat, named Trojan.Bayrob, is quite advanced and tries to implement a man in the middle style attack. While we have previously seen Infostealers that try to steal your username and password, a threat attempting a man in the middle attack on eBay is very unusual.Man in the middle attacks are very powerful, but are also difficult to code correctly. Trojan.Bayrob takes the approach of implementing a local proxy server and directing traffic bound for eBay through this local proxy server

Wow! This all sounds oh so familiar, we actually were scammed out of $8,500.00 and it was by a girl named Nichole Burk who actually lives in Ohio. She portrayed herself as a soldier home from Iraq named Reid Hudson who was to be from Ca. We purchased a white vw jetta tdi, and NEVER received it. She is currently in prison and we are about to start the court hearings. I just was wondering if she was related to any other cases?

Anonymous said...

um yes her name is nichole burk and no she is not in prison !!!!

Anonymous said...

Tell me more about your case. You were scammed by Nichole?

Anonymous said...

I apologize, I was unaware there was a difference between jail and prison. So, I guess she's in jail, Is that better?

Anonymous said...

I'm actually in the middle of two of these scam offers. the names are veronica coelho who says that is in Portugal and, Kathy White which is currently unavailable for a driving test (Washington). Both coincide in saying that were injured in an accident. And, that eBay Shipping.com have the car ready to ship. Also that shipping cost are free. Both and many other cars are listed in the New York Times classified. Authorities must put these people in jail quick.

Almost got scammed today, had the 4500 IN hand for an 2004 blue audi S4 with 63500 the deal seemed to be sweet, she sent me all the fake ebay confirmations and even the shipping company! it just seemed to be too good to be true, As soon as i brought up the "moneygram" to a friend he knew it was a scam, I sware this person had me going, was actually kinda sad i wasnt getting an S4 for 4500 but hey its better then loosing 4500 to some crackhead, they called from Upland ca, told me the car was in Montana, the lady could barly speak english, told me that she was goin though divorce ya right. It truly all looked legit, even a Bill of sale!!! They should put these tools in jail.

the car will be shipped with DAS auto shippers(recommended by eBay).
it will be trucked forward to your place,
you will not have to pick it up from a terminal/port.
from the moment the payment is secured by eBay
the shipping process will begin and it will arrive at your address in about 7working days.
because the car was listed also on eBay motors,
for payment, I´ll like to use an eBay purchase protection serVice, so we'll be both protected.
So, if you decide on buying the car, I want the deal closed only through eBay.
you will make the payment to eBay and they will hold the money until you receive the car.
only after you receive the car and you inspect it, eBay will release the payment to me,
in this way we are both protected.
please get back to me asap if you decide to buy,
and include in your e-mail your full name and address where you want it shipped so I can start the deal with eBay.
you will receive all the transaction payment and shipping details from them

I ran into the same scam on Craigslist. It was a 98 Harley road King for $3800. I knew it was to good to be true, but I emailed anyway. I received this reply from Linda F lindalinux@linuxmail.org

Hello and sorry for the delay, I want to thank you for your interest in buying my 1998 Harley-Davidson Road King Loaded is in great shape, no engine problems, damages or hidden defects. The motorcycle has a clear title so don't worry about that. It is in excellent condition. It runs and rides perfectly, well maintained and treated with respect. A good bike at a good price. Bike runs very well and is very fast, very good condition , garage keeped never seen a drop of rain, new battery and oil change. It runs and rides like new. I have the title in hand. There are no cracks dents or broken parts on it, is like a new one. The mileage is 46664, the price is $3,800. To see the pics just click on the link: http://s373.photobucket.com/albums/oo176/1998HarleyDavidsonRoadKingLoaded/ I`m a single mother and i have problems with money, that`s why i`m selling it so cheap. I need to sell the motorcycle quickly because I will move from town. We will use eBay's services to handle the deal for our safety. If you are interested in buying my motorcycle, I am waiting for your reply.
------------------------------------

After replying I was interested, and wanted to see the bike ASAP,
I recieved this:

Hello,

The car is located in Collegeville, PA (i just moved here with my new job), like
i told we will use eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection, so we can both be protected
and insured. Everything needs to be clarified and I do my best to take this sale
to an end and I have a selective way to do this. I hope you understand. The
payment will be made safely under eBay’s vehicle purchase protection program.
Look how this works:
1. I will contact eBay and give them all the info about this deal.
2. They will accept the transaction and will offer their vehicle purchase
protection.
3. You will send the money to eBay and once the payment is received, they will
confirm to me your transfer, and I will start the shipping process.
4. You will receive your car in maximum 2 days and after you’ll inspect/test
drive the car and decide to keep it, you’ll notify eBay and they will forward
the money to me.
5. If by any reason the car is not as described or if you find any problems with
it, it will be shipped back (on my costs) and you will be 100% refunded. I'm
sure it won't be the case because it's a good vehicle.
You will have 7 days from the time you receive the car to inspect it and decide
if you want to keep it or not. I apologize if it seems like I'm pushing on this
deal but I really want to be sure everything is clarified. Please don't
misunderstand it. I'm not forcing you to complete the deal in any way. If you
don't agree with the terms stated there you can withdraw from this transaction,
but if you do, I am waiting for your full name and full address so the eBay
sends you the deposit form via e-mail.
Thanks for cooperation!
-----------------------------------

I emailed back that I was interested in the bike not a car and received this reply:

Hello,

If you wish to purchase it please provide me your full name, full shipping
address and phone number so I can initiate the deal through eBay. Thanks for
your cooperation and I'm waiting for your e-mail. Bye
---------------------------------

the whole thing seemed fishy from the get-go. if you read the emails posted previously on the site you'll see many of the same phrases used in the ones I recieved. Be careful out there folks!

Almost fell into the scam this morning. I found a 2005 Nissan Altima on Craigs List last Sunday for $2900. I contacted the seller; all the way, the conditions were somewhat suspicious - the price was unbelievable low for the car. However, it wasn't until this morning when I received the "invoice" from a fake email address and the instructions to send payment through Money Gram that I became very suspicious. I found that the server used to send the "support" email was in Pennsylvania, not in a Western state like I would have imagined. Then, I googled some keywords: "ebay motors payment process money gram" and I came upon this site and another one, which saved me from losing $2900. BEWARE OF SCAMS!

Anonymous said...

how do you have the authorities get at these scammers? does anyone know?

I found a 1995 toyota supra on craigs list for 6 grand. I've wanted this car for a long time so I contacted the seller and his email was almost identical to some of the emails people have been posting on this site.

I just narrowly avoided this scam tody. The car I wanted was on craigslist but according to the seller it was going to go through ebay's vpp program. I recieved the invoice which is quite convinceng.

In order to double I check I chatted live with somone from ebay and the told me. 'WE NEVER ALLOW POINT TO POINT MONEY TRANSFERS AS A METHOD OF PAYMENT AND THE ONLY CARS HANDLED THROUGH EBAY ARE BOUGHT ON EBAY'

If you remember that it's really quite black and white

HUNT THEM DOWN & SHOOT THEM IN THE HEAD!!! I sent the money not knowing anything about ebay except that it was a big company that everyone uses...I sent 5,000.00 to a Lieutenant John Fowler (india) who was shipping out to Iraq (reason for the good deal)on a 2000 BMW. he had me use the ebay motor company VPP after I sent the money, they then told me I would need another 2,370.oo for Insurance for when the car was in my care for the 7 days but this amount would be refunded.....I called 911.... the Police came to my house and got on my computer.....they where actualy in the PPV live chat acting as ME! They found out the real information on these cars & there real Owners & states they where in ect.. all while chating to PPV. The police found other cars this guy had listed for sale for other unsuspecting victims. The police where great! I will probably never see my money again, but at least now they have them in there sites.. and in less than 24 Hrs. I have a FBI internet fraud case # there are camras in every Money Gram Location.. the cops told them they were trying to get another loan for the insurance and would be sending it soon!!! lol...no whos laughing mother fuckers! it is a sick feeling when you get riped off like this but if you do, you should not stop till they find the terrorist! AIM that double barrel right back at them call the police and get the FBI involved.. and email the site that offered the car for sale, ask the police to e-mail them too I did! they should not be allowd to help them victimize unsuspecting buyers! send that nasty e-mail to everyone you know hit them where it hurts..dont buy anything from carsforsale.com than go to: www.ic3.gov/media/2008/FraudAlert.pdf

My car is in perfect condition. No accidents. The price for my car is $3,900. Here you have the pictures hosted: http://s363.photobucket.com/albums/oo76/album3453264w5/?start=all

Mileage: 43,762 miles
VIN: 2CNDL63F056034106
Title: Clear
Body type: SUV
Engine: 6 CYLINDERS 3.4 Liters
Exterior color: White
Interior color: Gray
Transmission: Automatic
Fuel type: Gasoline
Leather seats, CD player, Anti-lock brakes, Driver airbag, Passenger airbag, Cruise control, Power locks, Power seats, Power windows, Air conditioning

I am in a wheel-chair and I am living now at my parents in San Jose/CA. My husband died and as a single widow I don't need this car.
It was an accident two years ago between my husband's car (1995 Toyota Supra) and a BMW X5. That Toyota was totaled. I know that the price is so cheap but I need money asap for a surgery in China because I have a chance to walk again and I don't want to lose it.

The car is located at eBay Motors Shipping Cargo from San Jose/CA. Its sealed and ready to be shipped. Since it is at eBay I have to make the transaction through them.
They will handle the transaction for me. I don't have the car listed on eBay, I only have the car at eBay Motors Shipping Cargo.
Shipping to your location will be made through eBay Motors Shipping Cargo, its free and will be take 3 days. Also you have ten days for inspection.

You will send the money only after you will receive and test the car.

I'll wait your decision regarding my car as soon as possible and if you want to make the deal, eBay Motors will send you a letter with all instructions and there you can start the transaction.

Looking forward to hear from you,
Melinda Wilson

Looks like last post!!! Poor girl:(
she needs to walk again :)

I actually just ran across what I think is a scammer. It was an ad for an 05 equinox for $3900.00
This is what "Melinda Wilson" told me about this vehicle.

If this really is a scam, this person should be ashamed of themselves acting as though they are physically handicapped in order to get money. How pitiful is that? It's a shame what this world is coming from. Hopefully, noone falls for these stupid scammer's trick's.

I unfortunately have received emails from 3 sellers recently myself. One was in regards to an Acura TL2004 with 60,000 mile going for $2,800 (woman supposedly recently divorced), One in regards to a Mercedes SUV 1999 on craiglist (I kept her initial e-mail and response after I called her out). Here is the initial email:Hello,

I'm in Helena Montana(we just moved here because of my new job),the thing is i had 2 guys promise me to buy it and pick-it up :
one didn't show up and the other called saying he lost the money, so i can't afford to take days off my work for that, that is
why i gave to a shipping company that will ship it to the next owner, it is sealed in container, so i'm trying to sell it online,
if i don't get lucky in about a week you can come pick it up
so if you want to buy it i will ship to you and deal trough eBay (since i had it on their site for a while).
You would have to send me your full name, full shipping address and if you do that you can consider it yours.
You will buy under these therms :

- you pay to eBay and they will transfer the funds to me only after you get the car
- shipping cost will be supported by me
- you are given a 7 days inspection period to decide if want to keep it or ship it back at my expense

You pay ebay the deposit, they will ship the car, you get within max 3 days, inside the car you get the bill of sale,
the title, owner`s manual,2 keys and the rest of the paperwork.
depending on your decision ebay will transfer the funds to me or give it back to you and ship the car back to me at my expense.
1st step is to send your full name, full shipping address for ebay to send you an invoice and assist you.
P.S. I am waiting for your response and if you agree,we will make the arrangements.
cheers

The last one I recently received as of today was in regards to a 2001 Tahoe with less than 100,000 miles and going for $3k. Via www.kijiji.com (spin off of e-bay) These people are sick in the head and need not play with peoples emotions and money especially with all the problems that we are already having with out jobs and economy as is! I am fortunate that I have always been a person who does not fall for the "too good to be true" antics. Please be careful when choosing any goods via internet especially nowadays!
Good Luck To you ALL!!!! K. Richmond*

I received this email after saying I was interested in a 2006 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SUPERCHARGED for $13,500. Here are the emails I got:

1) Hello there,
Thank you for your interest in my 2006 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SUPERCHARGED. I want you to know that I closed my auction earlier because someone offered me the buy it now price, but didn't have all the money available, I cannot accept financing. The price I want to obtain for the car is $13,500 US (this price includes shipping and insurance charges).
The car is like new, completely working, perfect running condition, with no
hidden damages or accidents,it has always been garage kept, low miles, non-smoker no flood or storms. It is a US model with US specs and passed the US test emissions. It will be as if purchased locally. The car is insured in case of damage and you will receive it to your address in 5 working days . It will come with all the necessary papers (clear title, bill of sale, warranty documents, user's manual, insurance etc). The title is clear and you will be able to register the car in your state without any problems.
I am requesting a $4,500 refundable deposit at the beginning of the shipping and the balance to be paid after delivery and inspection. If you are
not 100% content with the car you will be able to ship it back on my expense to get your deposit back. I am sure this will not happen, because it is a state of the art vehicle and you will have no reasons not to be content with it.
We will use eBay Motors as third party. First you will pay the down payment to eBay and you will send the receipt proving your payment to eBay. Please note that eBay will hold your deposit of $4,500 until you will confirm that you received the car and you transferred the title into your name.
If you agree with these terms, please send me your full name, home and shipping address, eBay ID so I can register the transaction with eBay asap.

...waiting for your fast answer, Scott McKay.

2) Hello,

First of all please let me tell that I will make this transaction only under eBay Motors protection program because is more safe for us.
If you really want to buy the car please send me your full name and address, also ebay ID to start this deal.
I will forward your details to eBay and they will contact you with all the instructions and details to begin the transaction together.

Please just let me know ASAP

All my best

It's a scam, but I almost fell for it, til a friend said, "Listen, if it sounds too good, it is probably a scam. I was so sad, but happy I did not lose $. His ebay username is bucky111_98. So, if anyone encounters him, beware! Thanks!

Where are you located?

P.S. Please don`t forget to send me your info!

Hi,
I know that you have many choices on Kijiji and I appreciate that you contacted me.
The car is in a perfect condition, 100% original and the engine works great. Like you already have seen in the pictures, no scratches, no rust, no damages, no hidden defects. I sell it so cheap because I just moved from Canada. The car is still registered there. Those are the reasons why I'm selling it for $4000 including the shipping and insurance charges. All documents and the notarized bill of sale will be provided along with the car.
The transaction will be made under an escrow company called Moneybookers.
I'm a serious seller and a fair trader and I prefer to deal only with a serious buyer. If you consider yourself one please e-mail me back so we can start our deal.
Thank you!

Ok listen to this, like many of you i found a mini cooper on craig's list with a price"to good to be true."

She sent me the typical emails from her emails alicekeys33@yahoo.com.

The thing is i knew it was a scam from the very begining. In the picture on craig's list there was a number in the background. I googled that number and it came to a mechanic in El paso Texas. Also she listed it in many cities on craig's list. I also googled her address on the "invoice" she sent me and got a laundry mat in montana. I found the place. It's called B & S laundry. I called it and asked about a mini cooper. A man sounded suprised and said no this is a laundry mat. These people are assholes.

I recently received an email like these to good to be true scams. It contained a link to photobucket to view more photos and I clicked it. Could this infect my computer with the trojan I read about, or do I have to open an attached file in the email to get it?

Thanks

The same thing almost happened to me just a minute ago. This time it was a Toyota highlander but same story, same fake ebay escrow deal. I did a search on ebay + vehicle protection + scam and found this thread. I guess as the old adage goes, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is...

Almost got scammed as well with a too good to be true truck. Ebay will confirm any e-mail you get by sending it to spoof@ebay.com. Thank God my bank checked with me and informed me about a potential scam.

i found this scam right on ebay today. i had seen it on craigslist and was kinda surprised they would post it right on ebay. here is the email i got in response to my "interest" in his car.

Hello Brandon ,

My name is Mark Green, I want to thank you for your interest in my 1969 CHEVROLET CAMARO RS Z-28 - $5900 . You shouldn't worry about shipping expenses, as they are included in the "Buy Now" price and that's all you will have to pay to get the vehicle.
I must tell you that I'm selling this beautiful car, not because I want to, but because I have to, i am have some financial problems right now and i really need to sell the car soon.

So, I have for sale a remarkable, beautiful car, for those of you who like to drive and drive. This vehicle has a clean title, and it's very well maintained. No damages, scratches or hidden defects, and I have to tell you that the engine runs great !!!

Shipping will be done with DAS insured and will take up to 5 days to reach your address. I will pay all shipping and delivery costs (they are included in the buy it now price). The car is in Seatle WA where i moved with work and it will be shipped from here.

I prefer that our deal be supervised by eBay! eBay will assign an eBay agent that will receive a 2950$ deposit payment which i request to be sent first and place the funds in a trust account, until they have confirmation that you've accepted the vehicle. After you have received and tested the vehicle, you will have to contact eBay with your acceptance confirmation and then send the balance payment to them.

Please send me your eBay id, so I can let eBay know that you are interested in the vehicle, and to also add you on my pre-approved buyers list. You will receive an email from eBay, instructing you about how to make the payment. They'll release the funds to me, only after you've received and inspected the vehicle.
I think that this is a fair way to conduct business, and I sure hope that you will agree. I don't touch your money until you've received and inspected the vehicle.

I really hope that I've attracted your attention and you are still interested. I look forward to any questions that you might have regarding this wonderful vehicle.

Mark

I have been inquiring about a Jeep Wrangler that I saw on craigslist for $2800. The scammer sent pictures and told me to send the money via money gram to Harry Puller in NC. They also used the ebay scam. The person that I have received emails from is candy.stuard@msn.com.

I just about fell for these scammers too on an RV that was too good to be true. Here is the e-mail;

Hi again Tim,

The RV has 4 seat belts, is in perfect condition, nothing wrong with it and i am a private seller, but this is not my firs sale on eBay.
The price is CAD $4900 with all taxes included and shipping. The only reason why i sell it so cheap is because i need the money right now.
The water damage was nothing major, and there are no signs about this problem in the RV.

I must inform you that I live in Montreal and I have to let you know that right now I'm out of country with some business and the RV is garaged at DAS Company. eBay will make the deal for me. I sign a contract with them and they will finish the deal for me. Time is really an issue and we have to move fast. Now we have our money stuck,so the low price is for a fast deal.

SHIPPING

You will receive the RV by shipping through DAS Autovehicle Transport Services. It is insured in case of damage and it will be delivered to your DOOR. I will pay all the shipping costs of the RV, and you won't have to pay any additional taxes when it arrives to your address.
I will send you the RV with all the papers (title, bill of sale.., etc.)The title is clear and clean,no lien,no loan on it. The shipping will take maximum 5 days.

PAYMENT

The transaction will be made using eBay motors, a company who will insure the transaction. They have a program called eBay Vehicle Purchase Program. This service allows us to complete this transaction in a manner that is quick and safe for both of us. It acts as a third part between seller and buyer. eBay Motors is responsible to insure that both parties comply to transaction requirements, both parties must submit proof of payment/delivery presented in a legal form (payment/delivery receipt) by the registered payment/delivery service used.

RETURN POLICY

As soon as the RV arrive to your address, you will test it and if it does not matches 100% to your expectations, you will return it in maximum 30 days since the arrival date. In this case eBay Company will send you the full amount back in 24 hours and you will send the RV back to eBay and you don´t have to pay the return shipping.

If you want to start with this deal ,E-mail me asap your full name, address and phone number for shipping, and I will require those forms right now.

You can also ask more questions at eBay, they have a 24 hour customer protection service ready to assist you : support@vehicle-purchase-protection-prog.com

As soon as I receive these informations from you I will forward them to eBay Company along with the rest of the details in order for them to open a case regarding our deal and send you the forms for payment and shipping.

Best regards,
Steven

thanks for posting i almost got caught in the same thing. here is what he wrote to me
Hello again,

The truck is in a warehouse of the shipping company, in Kelowna, BC, ready for delivery because I'm not in Canada for the moment and the pick it up option is not available. There is nothing wrong with it ... I sell it at this price because i recently moved from Canada to Spain with my wife who is from Barcelona, and we intend to buy a house here. I sold my house in Canada and everything owned by me and the only thing left to sell is this truck. The transaction will be made under eBay's protection for our safety because i'm affiliated at eBay and i have a purchase protection account of $ 20,000. The truck will arrive to you with all the original documents, including owner's manual, clear title, bill of sale on your name and if it won't match with my description, you will have 5 days to return it and i will pay for the shipping back. So ...i will need your full name, shipping address, and a phone #, to prepare the shipping and contact eBay to start this transaction. They will give you further instructions on how to complete this deal.

Similar scam - someone tried getting my dad.

Brianna davof@ymail.com

Hi ,

The car is in Loveland, CO and I'll ship it to you with no problem (my x-husband works for DAS and the shipping will cost me very, very low to any address in US). I have a contract with eBay so this deal must go through them. I'm very busy with my job and I`m left out of town so I can't meet you in person, so this is the reason why I chose to sell my car over the Internet. According with eBay you have 5 days from the time you receive the car to inspect it and decide if you want to keep it or not.
Here is how it will work:
1. First of all I will need the following details from you:
- Full Name
- Full Shipping Address
2. After I will receive the details from you, I will forward them to eBay.
3. After they will process your info, they will send us both invoices. The invoice will send you the details on how to make a refundable payment.
4. eBay will contact me and I will ship the car to you. After you receive the car you will have 5 days to test, verify and do whatever you want with the car. If you will buy it, then I will receive the payment details from eBay so that I can pick up the money.
5. If you will decide that you will not buy the car, eBay will refund the money and I will have the shipping company come pick up my car.

If you wish to make the transaction, please send me the necessary info (complete name and full shipping address) so that we can proceed. I look forward to hear from you.

Thank you,
Brianna

Hi,

First of all I want to thank you for your interest for my 2001 Honda Accord. I'm selling at this price ($2,900.00 US) because i just finished a divorce with my husband. When the divorce was finished i owned this car. As a women i don't need it. This car's engine runs very, very smooth. No damages, no scratches or dents, no hidden defects, never smoked in. All power and optional equipment work perfectly.
This Fire Red Honda Accord has 68,500 miles, Automatic Transmission, leather, power seats, power sunroof, power everything and comes with a clear title. From the beginning you have to know that for the payment I request only secure pay, I prefer the payment to be done using eBay services.
We will use a safe payment method because I am affiliated at eBay and I have a purchase protection account for $5,000.00. The final price that I want for this car is $2,900.00 US including shipping and handling.

I will not negotiate the price. I will take in consideration only those buyers who are really interested in buying the car, to be sure that I don't waste my time with endless discussions. This way, I shall be assured of the serious intentions. So if you are interested please e-mail me back for more details about the transaction.

I will wait your answer (if you are interested to buy) very soon.

Attention: The below is a SCAM. I'd love to see someone find this guy and roll him up.

Hello,

This 2004 Jeep Wrangler 4X4 Rubicon Edition w/ Hard To 4.0L SMFI I6 Power Tech eng with 47,971 miles, runs and drives excellent. This jeep has been extremely well maintained with a full service history. I am the second owner of this jeep and you will not have any problems with registration since it's still registered in AZ. I bought it when I was serving in Ft. Huachuca, U.S. Army base in Sierra Vista, AZ, for my wife as a wedding gift, slightly used in 100% working and looking condition, very well maintained with a full service history. It has no leaks or drips and does not smoke at all.

I have dropped my price to $4500(purchase price) since this is an urgent sale and I need to sell it before Feb 27th. when I will be deployed in Iraq with my platoon replacing the troops scheduled to come home. To conclude this deal in a timely manner, the financial part will be managed by the eBay's Buyer Protection Program. They are acting like a third party in our deal. Which means that you will have a 10 days inspection period before committing to buy the vehicle. In this way both, buyer and seller are 100% covered during the steps of this transaction.
- If you're interested to purchase just email me your; Full Name and Shipping Address, So I can notify eBay that you are selected as my buyer and they will contact you to explain the entire procedure.

Click on the link below for more info & pics about the jeep.

Just received e-mail, seller posted 2003 WRX on autotrader.ca for $4500. (see e-mail below)
Husband cheated on her, in the car. She is selling it cheap through ebay so she can donate the money to the red cross....

Thanks for the heads up.

"Hi there,

I am very sorry for answering you so late, but I was very busy finishing my divorce and was unable to reach my mailbox.
My 2003 Subaru Impreza WRX listed on autotrader.ca is in great shape,no engine problems, damages or hidden defects. Hasn't been involved in any accident. The car has a clear title, no liens.Transmission is Manual and has 93,000 km.

I just finished the divorce, and I am very glad that I took the car, because it was my husbands most precious thing. I have recently moved from Canada to Washington(US) after the divorce and I took the car with me, that is why i am sending it from here. The car is still registered in Canada so you will not have to pay any Customs taxes.

The price I am asking for it is $4,600 CAD including shipping and handling. I don't ask to much for the car because I just want to get rid of it ASAP, since the bastard cheated on me in this car. It is bad memory and I should get rid of it. I would probably donate the money from the car to the red cross, as it seems the best solution.

I have been trading on eBay for some time and I am an affiliated member with a purchase protection account up to $10,000. I guess you can understand if I request this transaction to be made through ebay. Besides I get also some advantages to my account by donating this money.

If you are interested in buying it please provide me your full name and address so I can initiate the deal through eBay (with no further obligation to buy it or fees).

I will wait your answer very soon.
Regards,
Laura Prince "

Just finished e mailing the guy who posted a scam on Craigslist for a 2007 Honda CRV for just $4,500.00.

Here’s the email he sent me:

Hello there,
Thanks for your email !

First of all I would like to tell you that the truck is located in Quebec, Canada as I recently moved here. I received a good job here and along with the job I received a new car. I have no use for the truck anymore so I am forced to sell it below the market value. The full price is $4,500.00 US dollars with shipping included to your location. I have a clean title ready to be signed. The truck has no electrical or mechanical problems, never been involved in any kind of accidents. For our protection we can use eBay Motors to complete the transaction. The deal will go strictly according to eBay rules and policy. I want you to know that I'll handle the shipping, so this will be free of charge for you. We will use eBay Motors to manage the payment because it is the safest way for both of us and also you will have 3 days to inspect the truck before I receive the money. Also, a refund policy will be included. In order to start the official transaction, I need to know your details:

- Full name and Shipping address

I wrote him back and said this:

Sorry Michael, I’ve read too many ebay motors scam reviews to get involved. The scams report vehicles, too good to be true, interestingly enough, almost all at the sale price of $4,500.00. I’ve pasted one of the many examples below.

"Hi,
The car is located in Dallas(i just moved here with my new job),like i told we will use eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection,so we can both be protected and insured.I am waiting for you to pay them so i can start the shipping process and send the car at your place.
Thanks"

I’m sure it’s a just coincidence. Good luck on the sale of your Honda CRV though.

I have seen several people ask, and I have yet to see an answer to whther or not anyone knows where to report this stuff.

Hi
Here are a couple more names and email addresses from scammers:
Joanna Donovan joannafrey@rocketmail.com
Claudia Morisson claudiamorisson@windowslive.com
col.scottreed13@gmail.com
davidreilly@exxxmail.com
They all tried to sell me a car at a great price and offered to go through ebay! By the way this "Claudia Morisson" is persistent. I told her I was not interested since I cannot deal with her in person, she wrote me again!!

I almost fell for this same scam today on an ATV and trailer. I got a bit suspicious because of the price which included shipping and insurance ( the shipping alone would have been more than what I was paying for the whole deal. The site where the invoice came from looked very official ebaymotors@vppsafetransactions.com and could have fooled most anyone, but first I traced the eBay agent's address to a dump in Texas and the seller to an apartment in L.A. The fax number I was supposed to sent the Western Union receipt was in Yama, AZ. Watch out these people are GOOD!!!!
By the way, the seller is going by the name of Emily Granberg whose husband was just killed in Iraq (a little tug on the heart) and the eBay agents name is Benda Smith (real original).

Well, one tried to get me through a craigslist ad, for a 2005 Celica GT, wicked low price. Name was shown as Angelica Salgado (angelica.salgado71@yahoo.com) Here are her two emails...

1. Hello,

First of all I want to thank you for your interest in my car. I am selling it at this price
($4,400) because I lost my job and I'd rather sell my car at a reasonably low price now then lose my home. That's why she's on the selling block This car is in excellent working condition, no scratches, flaws or any kind of damage, slightly used in 100% working and looking conditions and comes with a clear title.
If you need more pictures, tell me and i will include them in my next email
I will wait your answer(if you are interested to buy) very soon.
Thank you

2. Hello, I have been a lawyer for 16 years and I still am one now and I will try to explain something to you. I have signed a partnership contract with eBay that will allow them to sell the car for me, because I don't have the necessary time to deal with the transaction myself. From the moment I signed that contract with them, I only have to find a person interested in buying the car. Once I find a person that is interested in buying and if that person allows me to forward its details to ebay (name, address, phone #), the rest is taken care by them. Please note that the car is (like mentioned before) sealed in a container at their HQ. Unsealing the container where the vehicle is held, would mean that I would have to be present there (not possible for the moment, as I am in a business trip in Ontario ). Unsealing the container would mean a violation of my contract's terms and conditions and I would receive negative feedback, not to mention that would void my contract with them. I am sorry but I can only do this transaction the way I proposed. I know you understand the obligations of a contract and I hope you understand why I cannot do this any other way. If
you are still interested in moving forward with this the way I proposed, I will be waiting for your reply with the requested info. I am looking for a fast sale and I cannot afford to waste time right now as I need to relocate to DC by the end of the month.
Regards, Angelica

I'm sick of these scams.

First of all thanks for the blog, I found this today when trying to find out if I was being scammed. I found a 2005 Infiniti G35X with 45,000 miles on Craigs list. The pattern of communication is exactly like the comments above...

Hello,
I have received your email regarding the 2005 Infiniti G35X with 45,990
miles.
The car is in perfect condition, with no scratches on it,no damage, clear
title.
The price for the car is $5,150 with shipping included.
The car was my husband`s as he loved it very much, but he did not enjoy it
as he died in a IRAQ 3 month ago...... It brings very bad memories to me, I
want to get rid of it.
The buyer will receive the car with all papers and receipts that he needs to
register it to his name.
Shipping will be done whit DAS and it will take no more then 2-3 days. I
have a friend there who will manage me a low price shipping and I assumed
that it is my duty to pay for shipping it.It will be delivered directly to
your address.
Anyway, I have to let you know that I want a fast deal so if you are really
interested in buying it,please reply with the following information ' s:
-Your full name;
-Your shipping address.(street,city,state,zip code)
The transaction will close only through ebay so we both will be protected.
I want ebay because as they are t he biggest company on the internet I think
that we can close this deal fast and safe for both of us. Also I am not very
familiar with the internet transactions and ebay is the only one I know.
I will look for your email,so that we can move forward with this deal!
Let me know.
Regards,

I replied I was interested and this was the second email...

Hello again,

The car is located in Miami(i just moved here with my new job)is already crated at the shipping company ready to be sent to any location anywhere in the world and i can't open it because is already paid.I have received your data. I will initiate the transaction through eBay and they will contact you with all necessary information about this transaction (terms, buyer protection, payment instructions, invoice, etc.) As soon i will have the confirmation from ebay you will receive further details regarding the shipping process (courier information, expected delivery date) Please look in INBOX,BULK,JUNK and SPAM folder and after tell me if you get all info from eBay.Asap

I just received this email from a Donna Perez, it looks very similar to the other emails on this blog:

Hi,
The car is located right now in Tucson AZ(we just moved here because of my new job),the thing is i had 2 guys promise me to buy it and pick-it up : one didn't show up and the other called saying he lost the money, so i can't afford to take days off my work for that, that is why i gave to a shipping company that will ship it to the next owner(on my cost), it is sealed in container, so i'm trying to sell it online, if i don't get lucky in about a week you can come pick it up.You will have 5 days from the time you receive to inspect it and decide if you want to keep it or not, if by any reason, you will not be satisfied, you will return the car to shipping company with no expense. Please reply with your complete name and shipping address in your next email and let me know if you are interested in knowing more details about this purchase so that I can open a transaction at eBay and to move forward with this deal. After that they will contact you with all necessary information about this transaction(terms, buyer protection, payment instructions,invoice,etc.).

P.S. Please don`t forget to send me your full name and address.

I believe my dad also got scammed. He sent a payment last week through MoneyGram for a vehicle listed on the website for kijiji in Guelph, Ontario, and we haven't heard from the seller in a couple of days.

My dad saw the same add, this time on Toronto's kijiji web site. The add is for a volkswagen beetle 2005, selling for $3500. Here's the link to the add: http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-Volkswagen-2005-Volkswagen-Beetle-New-GLS-W0QQAdIdZ111246724

Here's the description, in case it gets removed:

This car is in near perfect shape. A couple of tiny chips in the paint that you would expect to see in any car with more than 10,000 miles but very few! Other than 1 small dent in the underside of rocker panel behind the passenger side front tire, this car is perfect. The interior is absolutely show room condition and there is not one item that does not work as it did from the factory! If you do find anything, it won't matter because it still has the balance of the bumper to bumper factory warranty. I am so confident that you will not be disapointed once you see the car in person.

I will post again as soon as I get confirmation, but I have a feeling that it is a scam... Darn!

Bottomline: this is not only a vehicle scam...I was looking at buying a horse trailer and this scam was in full swing. a deal too good to be true. Because of input from this site we were able to call bullsh*t! Thanks. Additionally, this sh*t for brains had the nerve to say, she was a widower and her husband was killed in action in Iraq. What a pathetic piece of crap! The authorities should stop this kind of scam! immediately

My husband was just scammed out of 2500 dollars for a car that was listed on Craigslist (a 2006 Acura TL).
It is a sick feeling to be had, but I am not going to let this go. This guy scammed the wrong person this time. We filed an FBI complaint and a complaint with the local police and the police where he transfered the money to.
I was reading an article of people who have recovered money by banding together and getting the attention of different agencies.
If anyone else has been a victim of this scam please feel free comment....

This scam is listed in autotrade.ca right now.
2005 HONDA ACCORD COUPE EX-L
2005 HONDA ACCORD cpe, 79000 km, automatic, full options, for mor details please contact me, $7500.

Recieved an email from him:
Hello,
Thank you for contacted for my car: 2005 Honda Accord, 6 cyl, wich is posted for sale..The car is accurate, corosion free, no scratches, no damage of any kind, was properly serviced and stored, all the manuals and the original documents, only 79000 km,never been involved in any accident..The car is always garaged and rarely used, is registered in Canada and it has clear title. The problem is that I had to move with my family in United States where I got a new job transfer (i'm working as a doctor in a hospital). I brought the car here with me with the intention of driving it but when I found out about the very high import duties and all the restrictions regarding registration and emissions tests here I've changed my mind and I've decided to sell the vehicle.I want to sell it in Canada because is still registered there.Total price with shipping included is $7.500CAD!I know the price is cheaper then normal on the market but I want to sell the car faster then usually and I assume that a lower price will be a good solution. I hope there won't be any argue for the price as this is my bottom .I want to take this opportunity to assure you that this deal is 100% legitimate, the financial part of this deal will be managed by eBay Motors Shipping Company,in this way both of us will be protected! If you are still interested please contact me back so we can start the deal.
Thank you and have a great day.
Dr. Ronald Shoffler

I did some research and found that the import duties are ZERO on this car as it was made in North America ! Also even if it did not meet emission standards in USA, the only things that would need replaced is the Oxygen Sensor and the Catalytic Converter, the cost of which does not run even close to what this scammer is giving as a so-called Discount !
..and finally, look at the poor use of english that is being used, and how it resembles the older scams that circulate, like the "You have just gotten an inhertance..."
So do your reseach ! Your connected to the single greated resource on the planet "The Internet" use it to you advantage !

FYI...
This scam almost caused my sister to send approx $3K to some loser named
"davdavidmartin" @aol.com who was supposedly selling a 2000 Range Rover that appeared to be brand new for next to nothing. He listed it on craigslist, and when she contacted him, he said the car was in Illinois and he needed the money asap to pay a bank loan. He sent her an email with a "buy-it-now" page for the car, complete with pictures of it and a VIN# that she ran thru Carfax. I told her that him asking for a Moneygram was a red flag and NOT to send it. She sent him emails asking for more info, and included her #, but he kept sending BS emails about "buyers protection" thru Ebay and such. I am disgusted on one hand that losers like this are out there, then one the other hand, I am happy to have internet access to be able to google these losers and expose them for what they are = scum!

Here is his alleged name/address:

David Martin

Address: 17 Mockingbird Lane
City/State: Downers Grove, IL
Zip: 60515
Country: United States

and here is the name/address of the jerk who was supposed to "hold" the funds for him:

"Ebay Motors Representative"

First name: Eric
Last name: Haenel
Address: 2145 Hamilton Avenue
City/State: San Jose - CA
Zip/Country:
95125 - United States

Here is a phone number listed in one of the emails = 313-447-2739.
It is a cell phone number in Detroit, yet when you call the number, it sounds like a fax machine.

BEWARE ~ this scam is going on NOW
3/19/2009 !!!

this is an active scam that I hope NO ONE falls for.

BTW ~ I did contact EBay on this and was told by them that they NEVER allow sellers to ask for a MoneyGram payment, and that the sellers EBay account , "davdavidmartin" was suspended. nice!

Hello there,
Thanks for your email !

First of all I would like to tell you that the car is located in Quebec, Canada as I recently moved here. I received a good job here and along with the job I received a new car. I think I just got scammed. I am new to this country and i needed a car someone told me that carigslist is good place to buy used car. I saw this deal for VW 2006 Passat for $2900 , title was clear, history was clean, everything looked ok and got all the fake emails from EBAY. I paid the guy (Lt. Christopher Evans, posted in Barcelona, Spain" as per him") on Monday 3/16/09 without checking these blogs or with ebay. I have not heard from this guy for over 3 days now and I am sure I will not hear from him. I need to take some action against this crap.. any suggestions...

There were some people posing s Army Lt's in Omaha, they were selling cars on Craigslist also, one was an 05 Audi for $2700, it is probably a similar scam. Also, if you get an email from this guy . . .ETHAN.WIEREN@GOOGLEMAIL.COM, it is probably a scam, that is where my Prius email came from, when the guy said he was named Jacob Speelman. Thankfully my fiance did some research and found this site before I sent any money. He won't let me buy anything big without extensive research.

I appreciate the information as we just ran across a scam on Craigslist for a vehicle listed in a nearby town, only to find out it was at an Air Force base in New Mexico under the name of Allan F. Harper. Fortunately we didn't fall for it so we didn't lose any money.

Hi,

I've attached you more pictures. The car does not have the 3rd seat in second row.
The car is already in a shipping container (sealed with all the papers inside) in San Francisco, CA (U Haul Company)
I had a buyer in Los Angeles CA and I started the shipping process for him - COD (Cash on Delivery).
The car was picked up by Castaneda & Sons Transport, Inc. - is a small shipping company and Mr. Paulo Castaneda the owner is Italian and he is a very nice person I've been working with him for over five years - and was on the way to my buyer.
Unfortunately, his loan was not approved, so I had to stop everything. That's why the car is in San Francisco and I will keep it there until I will find a serious buyer for it.

So, if you are one, let me know and I will sell the car to you. But, because I lost allot of money with the shipping, papers and everything, I will sell it only thru eBay Motors.
They will act as third party in our transaction - basically, they will keep the money until you get the car.
I will provide free shipping and a 5 days inspection period prior to buying.
Please reply if you have the funds already available and I will be glad to explain how the process works.

Thanks,
Ken

I just got taken for my life savings for this scam:

Hi,
Thank you for your interest in my 2006 Volkswagen Passat that i have for sale.
The car is in perfect working condition , great looking as you can see from the pictures , no accidents , no flaws or dents. The car has clear United States title and 37,893 miles.
The engine runs very smooth and has no problems whatsoever.Always garaged and very well maintained.
If you want to purchase the car , you must know that the transaction will be closed using eBay's Buyer/Seller Protection Program in order for both of us to be 100% protected.
The payment will be made to eBay and they will keep the payment in escrow until you notify them that you received and want to keep the car.
You will have 10 days of inspection after you receive the car in which you can take it to your mechanic , drive it and decide if you want to keep it or not.
In case you are not satisfied by the car and don't want to keep it , you will have to notify eBay and a total refund will be sent in maximum 3 business days and i will sell the car to the next interested buyer in your area ( there is no need to ship it back because i want to sell it in United States since the car has clear US title).
I am currently in the military and i am located in Barcelona, Spain. The car is here as well. I was sent here to improve the military relationships between our country and Spain.
The final price for the car is $2960. If you will take it for this price, I am willing to handle the shipping. It will be shipped from here by plane with US Air Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. You will get it to the nearest airport in your area and then it will be trucked forward to your place. You will receive the car in about 4 days.
I am selling the car because i have made a loan back home to buy a new house and now i am forced to sell it asap because i have to pay the bank. It seems that the financial crisis affected us all.

Please get back to me asap if you decide to buy, and include in your e-mail your full name and address where you want it shipped so I can start the deal with eBay. You will receive all the transaction payment and shipping details from them.

If you need more pictures please go to: http://s662.photobucket.com/albums/uu341/evanschris_2009/VW%20Passat/ (if the link doesn't work , copy and paste it into a new browser page)

Thank you and have a nice day.

Here's another scam for all of you. 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe LT $4600. Post 03/30/09 The email address is jason.pasmore@gmail.com. The posting was off of Craigslist. He said that he is a US airforce Sgt that is in the UK and sent me the eBay motors Purchase invoice wanting it to be Money Gram. I figured it was a scam.

Anonymous said...

OMG thank you so very much!!! I just was about to make the money tranaction..Thank you alot. It seemed pretty funny that they wanted me to send the money via moneygram. I am trying to buy a car for my daughter and this would just disappoint her. People like this should be ashamed of them selves. I just sent the chick an email explaining to her the EBAY does not uses Money gram.....They use paypal. well see what she says..!!!! Again thank you very much for helping me out in this transaction.

I'm not sure if anyone has said this in previous posts but ANY and ALL emails from eBay come from whatever@ebay.com. There's is no ebaymotors.com, as I just found out after being screwed out of $7500.00. My own fault for not researching further. These guys are very smart. ymail seems to be a common occurance amongst these financial and emotional rapists.

my son almost fell victim to this scam but fortunately I did some research BEFORE he sent the money. The person who wanted to "sell" him this 2004 Jeep Wrangler used the name... Bob Thompson his email addy was bobby06thompson@gmail.com

This website saved me and my boyfriend from being foolish and getting screwed out of $4,500. We have a baby girl on the way and cant afford to loose a dime. We would have lost everything. I made that clear to the scammer, but she just kept going with the trasnaction. It shocks me they don't care they could ruin lives. Thank you so much, I thank god I decided to do more research!!!

I have been a victim of the ebay scamming just now. I actually read the same email that was sent to me. So beware of this person: Jessica Baker email address: jessbkr12@yahoo.com or jessbkr18@yahoo.com She said that she lives in Spokane/Wa. She was trying to sell me a 2005 Lexus ES300 for $4500. Come on this is a $20,000 vehicle. If I can't go and look at the car myself then I am not interested. I will find out who sent me this email and I will report fraud. This is not funny especially when the econmy is the way it is. Thank the good Lord that I did not send any money (yet) I mean I have 2 small children and would have been out that $4500 and for what NOTHING! Hope this helps you the way it helped me.

Another one, here in Canada. Mazda RX-8 for $5000. Look out for Jesica_Barbara@yahoo.com.

Thanks for puttin up info about this scam. I got concerned, but had no idea as to whether this was a legitimate offer or not. The use of Moneygram got me worried, and as soon as I sae your comments, I knwo there was a problem. Keep up the good work!

Almost got scammed - thank goodness for this site.

Thank you also Dr Phil who I just watched during lunch break - was doing a show on Scams.... I was a bit wary of a great deal that our manager (of the estate where we live which I am Chairman of) found on a known trading site for a Kanga Digger which we have had approval from all our owners to purchase. Was a bit suspicious as the price was very very good, it was apparently packed up and ready for shipping from Darwin NT (we're in Queensland) shipping would be free and we could trial it but would need to pay a deposit through Ebay (weird as I couldn't work out how Ebay was involved but figured it was thru PayPal. I essentially OK'd it as we could get our deposit back if thing was not good)... then new emails came back requesting full payment in 48 hours (seller BTW was in UK as "she had to move" I say she as her name is Erin.....there were some weird syntax errors in her writing and she also through in "sick son" which really got me suss......there were other things... plus then the Protection and other stuff from Ebay motors supposedly. As soon as I saw the "can't set up Paypal" and use Western Union or Moneygram I'm smelling big rat now... We just don't do Western Union here....but in US it's big....so I Google Ebay Motors Scams and here I am!

This is the last email received by our Manager:

I see that ebay has already issued the invoices with all the payment details. Please check your email and tell me if you have received them. You have all the details that you may need right there. All the payment details are explained in detail, there should be no problem sending the funds to ebay.
I am expecting the confirmation from ebay that you have deposited the money, so I can contact them and approve with the shipping process. You will receive your kanga in under 5 days.
From what I see the invoice is only valid for 48 hours... so I guess you will have to deposit the funds in this period...
For this transaction you will need cash because the payment will be conducted through one instant payment system.. like Money Gram or Western Union. Paypal is not an option for me because I didn't had time to open a bank account here in London, I had bigger issues on my mind with my job, my family.
My boy got really sick because he's not used with the cold weather here, he spent the last 2 weeks in the hospital with pneumonia, he's still recovering.
So unfortunately without a bank account I would be unable to retreat funds from paypal.
I hope the payment method is not such a big issue for you and we will be able to continue the transaction, but still if it is email me so we can discuss your concern.
Email me either way.

On the invoice page there's Live Chat icon, you can contact them at any time and ask more details about the transaction if you have any.

How do we stop these rotten bastards?

rick Picard said...

it happened to me and it was a friend who uses ebay a lot that discovered. She was a pregnant women who had to sell her mint 2001 Gold Wing Motorcycle for $4500.00 ( a bike worth an easy $12,000.00) The ebay note was exactly like the one posted. The big thing here was that the ad first appeared in a local paper as a small black and white photo with just the price and an email address. I contacted the person via email and she wrote back about all the interest, sent me a lot of great photos of the bike, plus her hubby's phone number should i have questions...never could get him on the phone...The tip off was that MoneyGram was the only way they would receive payment, plus the fact it felt too good to be true. But for a while....wowzer...and being a bit of an ebay rookie...man ya gotta watch out all the time..even the invoice was great...buyer be ware i guess.

Hello ,

As I told you in my first e-mail, I am located in United Kingdom, Edinburgh with my work. Before leaving my the city I had prearranged the deal with eBay Motors so my presence in Montana (where is the car) isn't necessary. After I will have all this details I will forward them to eBay Motors and I will proceed the order. eBay Motors will contact you with all the details that you need to complete this deal and also to see that i am covered by them and that I am legit seller. The vehicle looks and works perfect. As you see it has a lot of
options. No hidden problems and never involved in any kind of
accidents, ONLY 91,234 miles. The VIN# is: VIN: 1hgcm66804a024012
Since the car was also listed on eBay.com I prefer closing the
transaction trough their Vehicle Purchase Protection system because we are both protected. If you don't know how does the eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection Program work please let me know so I can help you.
I used it several times (as a seller but as well as a buyer) and
everything was perfect.
The vehicle was inspected by eBay. As well, shipping & handling fees
are included in the final price ($4000.00).
If you are interested please let me know your shipping details so i

I almost fell for the same scam. I was looking on Autotrader.ca and I found a 2004 BMW 330Ci (only 59,000kms) for $5200. I thought the price was waaayy too good to be true, so I did some homework and discovered that retail price for this car with similar mileage is in the $25,000+ range.
Stay away from "christucker26" because he's full of shit.
Thank God I came across this blog. It saved me from losing $5200 and serving possible jail-time after tearing "christucker26" a new asshole!

Hello and sorry for my long delay,

First of all, thank you for your interest in purchasing my car . I know that there are numerous

offers on the web and I'm glad that you choose to contact me regarding your willingness to purchase.

I am a private seller not a shop and I had for the moment the privilege to buy this car for a low

cost from a bankrupt store so that you have the opportunity to purchase from me at a great saving

from the original price.

We bought it along with others in order to make a showroom, but life had another plan for us. My

wife was promoted so we had to move to another town and we do not have time to make our showroom.

Besides, there are a lot of things which have priority now, so, this car has to go.The car is in

like new condition. The price is $ 3000.00 CAD.

Here are a few information about my car :

Year : 2005
Body type: Sedan
Engine: 4 Cylinder
Exterior color: Gray
Transmission: Automatic
Fuel type: Gasoline
Interior color: Gray
Options :CD player

PAYMENT:
The transaction will be made using eBay Motors a company who will insure our transaction. They have a program called eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection Program. SCAM - Autotrader 2004 BMW M3

http://www.canadatrader.com/result/detailinfo.aspx?ID=1419952&pgno=1&srt=10&r=edmontonalberta

I asked him some questions about this car and none of my questions got answered, instead he sent me this:

Shepherd tomi,

Hi,
I know that you have many choices on AutoTrader and I appreciate that you contacted me.
The car is in a perfect condition, 100% original and the engine works great. Like you already have seen in the pictures, no scratches, no rust, no damages, no hidden defects. I sell it so cheap because I just moved from Canada. The car is still registered there. Those are the reasons why I'm selling it for $3,800.00 including the shipping and insurance charges. All documents and the notarized bill of sale will be provided along with the car.
The transaction will be made under an escrow company called Moneybookers.
I'm a serious seller and a fair trader and I prefer to deal only with a serious buyer. If you consider yourself one please e-mail me back so we can start our deal.
Thank you!

Then I sent him this:

Where is this car located right now? How many kilometers does it have? Also, I'm not very familiar with moneybookers, so if I decide to buy this car would you accept payment through paypal?

Then he sent me this:

Hello again,

The car is in Vancouver crated and ready to be shipped. I work at 1st Move International Ltd and I will ship it on my own expense. I moved with my job to Oslo, Norway. The car have 20,000 kms.
Moneybookers is an escrow company. They will secure your deposit. Practically you don't send me any money up front. Your deposit is verified and deposited into a trust account and this way I can't take the money until you receive and inspect the car.You will have 5 days to inspect it.
If the car isn't like I advertised it, you can say that you don't buy it, and it will be shipped back at my own expense and you will be completely refund.
If you are still interested please send me your full details and I will open a transaction case at Moneybookers.

My best wishes and I'm waiting your response so we can move forward with this deal.

After researching his comments to other scams on this website, this is the same guy.

Unknown said...

@Andrew

What's interesting is that Moneybookers does have an escrow service... I wonder what the guy was trying to do? Would he try to trick you into using non-escrow? The price is definitely too good to be true.

You should play him along a while and see what happens.

Second email
Hi again,
The horse trailer is already at the shipping company in Orlando, FL(i moved here after divorce) sealed and ready for the shipping.
I have a contract with eBay so this deal must go through them. I'm very busy with my job so this is the reason why I chose to sell my horse trailer over the internet. According with the eBay you have 5 days from the time you receive the horse trailer to inspect it and decide if you want to keep it or not.
Here is how it will work:
1.First of all I will need the following details from you:
- Full Name
- Full Shipping Address
2. After I will receive the details from you, I will forward them to eBay.
3. After they will process your info, they will send us both invoices. The invoice will send you the details on how to make a refundable payment.
4. eBay will contact me and I will ship the horse trailer to you. After you receive the it you will have 5 days to test, verify and do whatever you need to the horse trailer.
If you will buy, then I will receive the payment details from eBay so that I can pick up the money.
5. If you will decide that you will not buy the horse trailer, eBay will refund the money and I will have the shipping company come pick up my horse trailer.
If you wish to make the transaction, please send me the necessary info so that we can proceed.
Thank you,

Ran across two Craigslist items one selling a Jeep that, surprise just moved to Canada (E-mail 1 is the response I got) and the second was a Range Rover from a soldier going to Iraq. Both seemed TGTBT and I started googling for E-Bay Motors scams. Honestly the only thing that saved me is that I haven't received my bonus yet, even though I normally check for these types of things. Thanks for opening my eyes.

E-mail 1:
Hello there,
Thanks for your email !

First of all I would like to tell you that the truck is located in Quebec, Canada as I recently moved here. I received a good job here and along with the job I received a new car. Also, a refund policy will be included.

what a deal. Also to good to be true.

Wow, thank you so much! I was a bit skeptical about this one ad for a car, and when we emailed me about doing the transaction via ebay motors, I started to do some research and ran across your site.
This is the link and email of the scammer:
http://cnj.craigslist.org/cto/1191026498.html

"Thanks for replying to my ad. I want you to know the car is in excellent
condition with no rust or any kind of damage anywhere and it doesn't need
any maintenance. The odometer shows 72,048 miles. I can provide you an
Autocheck report for the car. Title is clear and free of liens. This 2000
Nissan Maxima GLE has an automatic transmission and it's very easy to drive
even for a beginner.
My price is $3400. I am now in a divorce with my ex and i am in desperate
need of money to pay the mortgage on my house. That's my only reason for
selling it otherwise I wouldn't do it.
The deal will be handled by eBay trough their eBay Vehicle Purchase
Program . They will handle the title and money transfer and deliver the car
to your location. The car is at their office in San Jose CA.
The best part about this is that you'll get 3 days money back guarantee.
If at the end of those 3 days you decide not to keep it you'll get a full
refund by them. If you want the Maxima and if you have the money available
all you have to do now is to send me your full name and your address. As
soon as I hear that from you I will initiate the transaction through them.
The process is very simple and risk free for both of us.
All the pictures can be seen here:

Thank you"

You just saved me half my lifesavings lol. Thanks a bunch again!

I will prefer to use only eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection to complete the transaction safe. If you are interested in getting my car please give me a reply.

Yeah, I saw a couple of Odysseys (2005 and 2006) on Autotrader for $4900 and $5000. I looked up autotrader scam on google and found this site. I can't believe autotrader allows this kind of thing. Of course, it is kind of obvious with the ridiculously low prices (they could trade it in at a dealership for 3 times that)

Here is a new guy:
Hello again,

I am in a military base now. We are training, getting ready for Iraq. Like I already said, the delivery process
will be managed by me ( the Jeep is with me in North Dakota). In case it gets sold I will take care of shipping ( i will use a military trailer).
The sale will be managed by eBay for our own protection as they act as a neutral third part.
eBay will keep the money until you inspect/drive the vehicle.
This is how the Vehicle Purchase Protection Program works:
1. I will contact eBay and give them all the info about this deal.
2. They will email us the forms which are needed for our deal.
3. You will send the payment of $4500 to eBay and they will notify me to ship the vehicle to your location.
4. After you will inspect/drive the vehicle and decide to keep it, eBay will forward me the funds and the deal is done.
Remember you have 7 days to test it. If for any reason the vehicle is not as described or if you find any problems with it I will pay for the returning fees.
I'm sure it won't be the case because it's a state of art looking and working vehicle.
If you wish to purchase it please provide me with your full name and shipping address so I can initiate the deal through eBay.

Thank you

HERE IS THE LATEST SCAMMER THAT POSTED ON CRAIGSLIST. DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE "TO GOOD TO BE TRUE" ADS!

Hello I hope I'm not too late and you haven't already purchased another truck.
I saw you are interested in my 2005 Ford F-150 XLT.The truck has around 29,000 miles ( I have to sell it fast due to my job ), it's rust free, no scratches and hasn't been involved in any kind of accident. No water / flood or storm damage. I always drive carefully so the engine, transmission and electronic parts work flawless. I just had the oil changed, 1 week ago so there is no need to worry about that as well. The truck also comes with a set of 24" rims along with the stock ones.
This is one of the best trucks I have owned so far,it also comes with a CLEAN title.I want this transaction to be smooth and I don't have much time at my disposal to engage in endless discussions. I believe $4,000 is more than a fair price for this truck.

Sincerely,
Lt. David Lewis

P.S. You can see more pictures here:
http://s615.photobucket.com/albums/tt234/davidlws59/

I HAD REPLIED TO HIS POST AND HERE IS WHAT HE SENT BACK

The truck is at MacDill AFB in Tampa Bay, FL, where I am currently stationed, until June 12th, when I will be deployed to Iraq (I'm a US AirForce Lieutenant). This is the main reason I am selling the truck. Shipping won't be a problem for me,being a military I have access to some special facilities. I will take care of that, with no additional costs on your end. It will come with all the necessary papers (clear title, bill of sale, warranty documents, user's manual, insurance etc). The title is clear and you will be able to register the truck in your state without any problems. This is a large amount and I would like to conduct the deal using an authorized third party like Ebay using their Purchase Protection Program, so this should eliminate any trust issues. They will keep a deposit until the purchase is final, and you test and accept the truck. If you will not get the truck as described, and also a clean title you will receive your money back. To be able to use this program you need to qualify. I have been approved 3 years ago and I was very satisfied. So, if you are interested in buying my truck just let me know your name, shipping address and a phone number where I can reach you if necessary. I will forward these to eBay's protection program and wait for the approval.

Thank you,
Lt. David Lewis

SINCE I AM IN THE MILITARY I SEARCHED FOR THIS "LT DAVID LEWIS" IN MACDILL AND HE IS NOT REAL. (WHICH I ALREADY KNEW) THEN I EMAILED THE SCAMMER BACK LETTING HIM KNOW THAT I HAVE FRIENDS IN MACDILL AND ONE IS WITH THE FBI IN TAMPA, THAT I WOULD HAVE HIM TO "MAKE THE DEAL". GUESS WHAT, THE SCAMMER NEVER REPLIED BACK!!

it was 2 good 2 be true. once she said the car wasnt in the city listed but must be shipped, i knew it. heres the msg;

Hello ,

The reason why I'm selling at this price is that I have some problems with my health and when I will get back home I need to have the founds available for my surgery. I have to tell you that I'm currently at work. As I already told you, I work as a dealer on a cruise ship. Before leaving I had prearranged the deal with eBay Motors so my presence isn't necessary. The car is in their possession in United States, ready to be delivered. The shipping cost is included in the total price of the car!You have 5 days to test it and inspect the car. So if you want to make this deal I need the following details from you:

full name and address
shipping address
phone #

After I will have all this details I will forward them to eBay Motors and I will proceed the order. eBay Motors will contact you with all the details that you need to complete this deal and also to see that i am covered by them and that I am legit seller. Waiting your email with the requested details.

I just got one too.
I was so excited...what a deal. It must be to good to be true. So I emailed them and this is what I got......

Hi there,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding 1999 Toyota Tacoma. If you are interested in it you should know that it has never been wrecked or damaged, the car is in excellent condition. To get more photos and description please access this URL http://www.pixagogo.com/4619294143 The total price that I’m asking including shipping and insurance fees will be $2,200.00CDN. The car is absolutely perfect, it has a clear title, has never been repaired, never been involved in any type of accident or had any paint or body work done! I moved to England, United Kingdom due to my work, where European specs are different from the Canadian ones and it costs me too much driving it legally here and also there is nobody interested in buying it here that’s why I am selling so cheap hoping to find a buyer since the car is located in Canada.
If you are still interested please let me know and i will provide you more information about the payment and shipping.
Best Regards!

From there i called CAA and got an insurance quote and ran the VIN....it checked out.
Then the guy sent me a payment email from Ebay Inc. [support@ebayvehiclepurchase.com]

Which I cold not verify. Then I read something funny. In step 4 of the directions it says to fax your payment receipt to ebay. ??? If im paying ebay, why would i send THEM proof I paid.
HOW DO THEY GET AWAY WITH THIS?
CAN WE TRACK THEM AND TURN THEM IN?

thanks for everyone posting here, i wanted to believe i was getting a great deal, but it was just too fishy. they listed a tahoe in autotrader, then they tell me the car is in NY, but now they work in canada, but they listed it in texas? why would they spend thousands to ship a car across the US? too good to be true. the email from ebay motors was a fake from das shippers. the phone number and account to wire the money to are from california. they are probably reading this link right now, GO F yourself dirtbag!!!

There is currently a guy by the name Pedro trying to sell a 2005 Toyota Celica for $3900. The email he sent was very similar to some of the ones posted here and something just didnt seem right.

"Hi again,
Look how we will do this step:

Before leaving I had prearranged shipping and also the payment with eBay motors. so my presence in U.S isn't necessary(The car is locked in a eBay motor warehouse Ohio ready for delivery). The price of car $3,900 includes all the shipping costs and insurance, so you won't have to pay any extra charges.
Here is what I suggest: we will use ebay which acts like an escrow service , you make a deposit in an eBay managed trust fund ( they hold the money until you receive the car ), I send the car over( the car will be delivered with the title, owner's manual, 2 sets of keys, service records, and of course the bill of sale authorized and signed by me),I will offer a 5 day period from the day you receive it from the shipping company, you can inspect it, take it to a mechanic to check it out, drive it and then if you decided to keep it, you'll confirm to eBay motors the sale and they will send the payment to me. If, by any reason, you will not be satisfied with it ( even though I can assure you that it is exactly as described), you can return it at my expense for a full refund of your money, no questions asked.I think this is more than fair for the both of us.
NOTE: The deposit (down payment) is refundable, and is just a security measure, to make sure that you are serious, and that I am not going to ship the car, and loose time and money.

If you are interested to go ahead with the deal, please reply with your full name and shipping address so I can ask eBay motors to open a case! After, they will contact you explaining all the details regarding the payment..
I'm looking forward to hear from you.

Thank you,

Pedro armand"

He also had this listing in multiple places online. Each one said the car was located in a different city in the U.S

For all of you asking about how to prevent this kind of fraud from happening to more people, I found on autotrader.ca that there is a page with information about reporting fraudulent ads:

http://www.canadatrader.com/general/info/fraud_bulletin.aspx

I also tried emailing them at fraudwatch@autotrader.com.

Hopefully if all of us complain about it then something will be done!

I, too, almost fell for one of these horrible scams just yesterday. THANK GOODNESS FOR THIS PAGE BEING ON THE TOP OF GOOGLE SEARCH!!!!
Stupid "Lidia Lugo" in England will NOT be getting ANY of my money.

everything. It all looked
legit and after sending
i got a funny feeling
checked ebay motors fraud
alert, and it said the do not
accept moneygrams. Luckily i was
able to stop the transaction and
get a refund cause they had not
received the payment. It was the same basic story divorced moved to portugal cant take car there.
They used the name Amanda Seamans am99se@gmail.com and ebay username floydcancer1 which ebay said is an inactive account. Thank GOD i caught this mistake on judgment.
I feel for anyone who has been a victim and hope the assholes get what they deserve.

I’ve been looking to purchase a dirt bike on AutoTrader.ca for a while now. The other day i spotted a ‘to good to be true’ deal. Sure enough it was too good to be true. After going back and forth with the seller, and being told about this great ‘ebay buyers protection program’, long story short some a**hole in England wants me to Money Graham him a cheque for $2,500 and then i’ll get the bike shipped to me (i'm in CANADA)....sure

The JERK included his personal info though, so that i could make the money graham out in his name. Not sure if this is their real info, but if anyone in England is reading this please punch this F*cker in the head for me.

I lost a bundle through this scam and am seeking retribution. I'm looking for others who were ripped off after responding to an Autotrader Ad. If you lost money and are willing to speak to me, please let me know.

Thanks alot for posting this scam i would have bought a car today if i didn have work and the post office was closed before i got off, it seemed way too good to be true and the seller "Dorothy Mills" would not give me her telephone number so i decided to come do some research luckly i didn spend my graduation money on a scam and be left with none... Im greatful for this add haha I knew a 1997 mint prelude for 2700 was too good to be true !

Anonymous said...

alright im convinced its a scam. Now i was about ready to do the moneygram today, within the 24 hours. then i decided i wanted to look around a little, and i was ready on ebay the no money grams thing. right away i emailed the person, saying if you can go through paypal then maybe otherwise im not falling for it. its hurt a lot to figure this out. I knew deep down not to get myself all stoked. Although im not done with this bitch yet, gunna see what i can do about it. anyway heres the email she sent me

Hi I'm Donna ,

The 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 is still for sale. It is in perfect shape. It has no scratches, dents and it was never involved in any accidents. It has 64,134 km. The title is clear. My final price is $8,400. I am forced to sell quickly because I need money to pay the mortgage on my house.
I already have tons of emails so I hope you understand that I need to sort them out. I will take in consideration only those buyers who are really interested in buying the truck, to be sure that I don't waste my time with endless discussions. This way, I shall be assured of the serious intentions.Thank you.

P.S. I already listed it on eBay at buy it now price $8,400 so you can purchase it there. That way you will receive assistance for the purchase, paperwork, title transfer and an extended warranty. They also are guaranteeing purchases up to $ 10,000 so we will both be protected.

I later replied and didnt hear back for a few days but only to get this

Hi again,

The truck is already at a shipping company in Halifax, Canada. I took the truck to them to be able to ship it to a potential buyer whilst I'm in the United States with my job. I also have the truck listed on eBay so i can use their secured system.
I'm very busy with my job and I'm sorry I can't meet you in person.
According to eBay, after you receive the truck, you have 5 days to test and inspect it to see if it is exactly as i described it, and if you decide to keep it, eBay will release the money to me. If not, they will refund your money and the shipping company will take the truck back on my expense and keep it until I find a new buyer.
I've included the link to the auction, you can check my feedback and you will see that my intentions are serious :
http:/ebay.com/listingcars&trucks/ebaymotors/2007-Dodge-Ram-2500_W0QQitemZ120413662377QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Cars_Trucks/item_0912837aca67435/=trkirfgr_o82373df3876y&throejnf=trkparms=61%3B3%dc45F%3321%7C240%3H1908

So if you really want to buy the truck press Buy it now on eBay and after completing the deposit payment of CAD 4,200 ( USD 3,650 ) let me to know your full name and full shipping address to send the truck.

So now im in the process of the investigation and seeing what else i can do

Glad I checked this out.

Look out for MARK STONE marksonte40@live.com selling a 2003 21SB TRAVELSTAR Trailer for $3900.00

He sent me a word for word email like the one above. I tried googling his name after seeing the ad because it just seemed too good to be true. He says he lives in NFLD, but is currently out of the country on business. His IP address says he's emailing from Toronto.

It looks like he also goes through the search engines, deleting his email address every day as yesterday there were no search results, but today? I found two! Google shouldn't allow them to delete websites on them... Scammers.

What a waste of time this guy was.

Here is copy and paste from a couples of adds I replied to for different cars and that was their response. I hope that the Scam squad follow this Blog.

1. Debra Harper [debraharper11@msn.com]
First of all I want to tell you that the car is still available and the price is 5,900 CAD.
This is a 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid with 12,300 kms..It is in EXCELLENT condition, the body and paint are great,no scratches and no dents, the interior is clean,it has never been involved in an accident.

I'm a Canadian Air Force Sgt. currently stationed in UK and the car is here with me. I bought it in the Canada,I am the first owner and I've never permanently registered it here, the car is still registered in Canada and for this reason there will be no extra or hidden taxes for you to pay.

If you really are interested in buying my car, then I will handle the shipping process that will take up to 7 business days.
From the moment you receive the car you will have 10 days to inspect, test and drive it.
In case you decide not to keep it then I'm responsable for shipping back costs.

I must say that this is a Canadian model car, with the steering wheel on the left side, as opposed to a UK model, that has the steering wheel on the right side.

The car is for sale locally as well, but there are slim chances of this to happen. In order to be able to register this car here in the UK,the buyer would have to pay very high import/custom taxes that will double the price. So I decided to sell the car back in the Canada.

Our transaction will be entirely through eBay Motors and we both will be covered. The final price is 5,900 CAD including shipping from Europe to Canada and delivery to your home address.
So if you decide to buy this car or need further information please get back to me as soon as possible.

Sgt.Debra Harper

2- James Meyer [james.meyer67@hotmail.com]
Thank you for your inquiry regarding 2008 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C300. If you are interested in it you should know that it has never been wrecked ordamaged, the car is in excellent condition. The total price that I’m asking including shipping and insurance fees will be $9,200.00CDN.

A few words about the car:

-2008 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C300
-Mileage: 12,944
-Automatic
-Title is clean.
-Engine: 3.0L V6 SFI DOHC 24V
-Exterior: Silver

If you are still interested please let me know and i will provide you more information about the payment and shipping.

Same "Quebec" scam, word for word

I found a TGTBT deal on Craig's List. I contacted the supposed seller. This email is EXACTLY the same as another reported one above!

************************************
Here is the original email I received:
Hello there,
Thanks for your email !

First of all I would like to tell you that the car is located in Quebec, Canada as I
recently moved here. I received a good job here and along with the job I received a new car.
I have no use for the car anymore so I am forced to sell it below the market value. The full
price is $2990.00 US dollars with shipping included to your location. I have a clean title
ready to be signed. The car has no electrical or mechanical problems, never been involved in
any kind of accidents. For our protection we can use eBay Motors to complete the
transaction. The deal will go strictly according to eBay rules and policy. I want you to
know that I'll handle the shipping, so this will be free of charge for you. We will use eBay
Motors to manage the payment because it is the safest way for both of us and also you will
have 3 days to inspect the car before I receive the money. Also, a refund policy will be
included. In order to start the official transaction, I need to know your details:

- Full name and Shipping address

Please find below the details of the car:

You can really see this beauty from all angles!
Thank you!
Billy Turcios

*************************************
I decided to check carfax. I noticed it was last purchased in Florida. The pictures on Photobucket showed Palm Trees in the background, so I sent the following email back:

Hi Billy,

Thank you for all the details you included in your return email to me.

The car is a real beauty. I checked the carfax report and was pleased to see you have been the only owner.
Is the car still titled in the U.S?
(I included my name, but a fake address).

Here was his response, notice the breakdown in English since this person no longer had a "scam template" to use:

"Thank you for the info..i will contact ebay and i will proceed the deal.
You will receive a notification from them with all the steps you need to follow to complete the deal. Shipping it is my job.. it will be done by DAS and it will take 3 days top straight to your location.

Please let me know after ebay  will contact you,and if agree their terms, let me
know when will you be able to make the payment,so I know when to prepare the shipping. Thanks"

That evening I received an invoice via eBay Customer Support support@secure-vehicle-deals.com

Of course, the invoice asked me to pay via moneygram.

The individual's name is Billy Turcios. The eBay agent is supposedly a Brandon Henderson.

I hope my post helps someone to fall into these traps!

this listing on trader.ca in Canada appears to be exactly the same thing.

http://www.trader.ca/Search/Details.asp?CAT=2

The seller responded to a request for info with the following (highly suspicious) email:
"Hello

The car is still available and the price for 2005 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner is $5,500. It has done 75759 miles and has been well taken care of, always kept in the garage. It doesn't have any dents, chips or scratches and the interior is great, never smoked in. The car has a clear title, no liens or loans and never been in an accident. It comes with bill of sale in your name, title, owner's manual and all the keys.
I was recently promoted and had to move to the UK. I'm located in London and the car is in Calgary,AB I have made all the arrangements and the car is already in a shipping container (sealed with all the papers inside). You can't inspect it now and the shipping and insurance charges are included in this price. The shipping takes 3-5 days and the car is delivered at your home.
I decided to make this transaction through eBay because I believe this protects both buyer and seller and it's the right way to do the sale. You send the money to eBay and they hold the payment until the car is delivered. You have 7 days to inspect the car and the documents. I get the money after you check the car and make sure everything is as agreed.
If the car is not as described and you want to return it, I will arrange to ship it back (on my costs) and you will be 100% refunded by ebay. I'm sure you will love the car and will not want to return it but it's good to know that you have this option available.
If you have the funds available and want to buy the car, I need your full name and the delivery address to inform ebay about this sale and receive the transaction details from them as soon as possible.

Many thanks,

Jeannette "

surprise, surprise, that truck isn't on eBay motors and a quick google of the VIN shows the same truck for sale in several different places at the same time, with some of the same pictures.
It's been reported to trader.ca and hopefully they yank it soon!

As always TGTBT is!

I found a 2005 land rover range rove supercharge in the calgary auto trader for $15,000 which seemed suspect. I went back and forth with the lady and she would never talk to me on the phone. I finally got the VIn # and pulled it, evrything she had said was a lie. Here is the email:

Thank you for your interest in buying my car. Let me tell you a few words about the car. It's a 2006 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SUPERCHARGED , in perfect condition, with no need for additional repairs, no scratches, dings, special marks whatsoever, never been involved in any accidents. The interior looks great (NO SMOKING). It has 48,000. It has a clear title ready to be signed and notarized on your name. The price is not negotiable , $15,000.00 is my last price.I sell the car at this price because I cannot enjoy it due to my job(I work as a dealer on a cruise ship) and I'm a single woman and I have nobody close who can use it. All documents, including owner's manual, clear title and a bill of sale on your name will be provided along with the car. Also about payment and shipping I will use only eBay vehicle protection program so we can both be protected.I just need your full name and address so i can open a case.(with no further obligation or fees).

I too responded to several ads on Craigslist for "too good to be true" deals. Funny how I got back 3 almost identical responses about 3 different cars. All wanted to use "ebays protection plan". So I took a minute to read this and it clearly explains that the purchase must be made thru ebay to be covered. Well i wasn't at all surprised to find that when I tried to find listings for the vehicles on ebay THERE WERE NONE for those vehicles! Buyers beware and do your homework!

Hello,
Sorry for the delayed response, but I'm in London, United Kingdom with my work and I have been very busy. Anyway, thank you for your interest in buying the car. The car is located in Charlottetown, Prince Edward right now and has Canada papers. The title is clean and you will have absolutely no problems to register the car. So all that I want to do now is to sell the car at this price, because I need to sell it fast. I will tell you a few words about the car.
My 2005 HONDA CIVIC HYBRID , Automatic transmission, it is in immaculate condition with 69607 km, no scratch and hasn't been involved in any accident. The motor runs very well(4 Cylinders). The interior looks great (NO SMOKING). This car needs nothing, the title is clear, it is not a salvage one. I want this transaction to go smoothly enough as I am caught in the middle of some very important events and have little time at my disposal. I already have tons of emails so I hope you understand that I need to sort them out. The price is $3,900 THIS IS MY LAST PRICE. I will not negotiate the price. I will take in consideration only those buyers who are really interested in buying the car, to be sure that I don't waste my time with endless discussions. This way, I shall be assured of the serious intentions.
So if you are interested please email me back for next step.

it seems like every car i inquire about it a FAKE! lol i guess i need to get back to reality and realize there are no great cars for a cheap price... i received similar emails from about 6-8 diff people its ridiculous, i am losing faith about finding a decent car online from a private sale... here are some examples.

Hi there,

I live in Whitehorse , Canada and the Toyota Solara SE is here. You are welcome to inspect it whenever you want or I can ship it to you at my expense(I have a free shipping ticket anywhere in Canada) and you have 5 days to inspect it after you will receive it to take a decision if you buy it or not.The price is firm $3500..

The Toyota Solara SE is in a very good condition. There is nothing wrong with it,garage kept, new tires, never been involved in any accidents. Runs and drives like brand new.

You can see more pictures here: http://picasaweb.google.com/mrtnking79/2002TOYOTACAMRYSOLARASE#

If you are unable to come in person to finish this deal, I want to use eBay Motors Vehicle Protection Program for our safety because they have a protection up to $50,000. If you are not familiar with it let me know so I can inform you how it works.

Thank you

2004 Toyota Corolla S

Hello,

This 2004 Toyota Corolla S runs and drives excellent. This car has been extremely well maintained with a full service history. It has no leaks or drips and does not smoke at all. I have dropped my price to $3250 CAD (purchase price), since this is an Urgent Sale! and I need to sell it before July 25th. when I will be deployed in Iraq with my platoon replacing the troops scheduled to come home.

Day-um; here's another one. It's not a wildly great deal, but it does include the "only want to do this through eBay services" schtick:

First of all I want to thank you for your interest for my 2004 Acura TL. I'm selling at this price ( $4,100 ) because i just divorced my husband and at the allotment i owned this car. As a women i don't need it. This car's engine runs very, very smooth. No damages, no scratches or dents, no hidden defects, never smoked in. All power and optional equipment work perfectly.
This Acura has 73,643 miles, Automatic Transmission, leather, cruise control, power everything and much much more options and comes with a clear title. From the beginning you have to know that for the payment I request only secure pay, I prefer the payment to be done using eBay services.
We will use a safe payment method because I am affiliated at eBay and I have a purchase protection account for $5,000. The final price that I want for this car is $4,100 including shipping and handling.

I will not negotiate the price. I will take in consideration only those buyers who are really interested in buying the car, to be sure that I don't waste my time with endless discussions. This way, I shall be assured of the serious intentions. So if you are interested please e-mail me back for more details about the transaction.

I did email her back saying I want to test drive it and have a mechanic look at it. Guess I'll be waiting for a while for a reply.

HI,

Just got scammed today. My husband and I have been looking to buy a quad for the last three months. We have scrimped and saved and finally found an awesome deal on ebay. Only to realize this afternoon that we got screwed. What do we do? Who do we go to? Is there any hope of getting our money back?

Unknown said...

@Anonymous (quad)

If you hurry, maybe you can cancel the payment, assuming you used Western Union or Moneygram?

Anonymous said...

We are past our cancel deadline. Will we have any luck going to the police? Has anyone had any luck with authorities?
I see that some of you have gone to court but I would imagine your lawyer fees would be quite high. We lost $3200 so that may not be worth it for us.

I'm so thankful for this blog, I was on my way this morning and I just couldn't shake the "too good to be true feeling" so I googled eBay motor fraud on my blackberry and this was the first site that came up..

My 64 year old father who is a devoted newspaper reader found the classified in the used cars for sale section, no phone number was listed just an email, he asked me send a message requesting more information on the vehicle listed, so, I did...Scammer's response below:

Hi,
I'm mmmmmmmmmm, you inquired about my 2005 Honda Accord EXL V6 Sedan (VIN: 11111111111111).
I apologize for the delay, I'm in the military and now I am in United Kingdom and that's why I couldn't reply in time.If you are still interested in buying it, I'm asking $4,600. It has a clean title, very well maintained, always garage kept, no rust, excellent condition, runs and sounds 100% perfect with no leaks or noises. All power and optional equipments are working perfect. I have to sell this car as fast as I can because I am about to lose my house if I don't pay the mortgage ASAP. This is why I am selling it so cheap. If you want to buy the car, I can ship for free within US with one of our military airplanes so you don't have to worry about the distance. Because I am out of country and I don't have someone in US to handle the transaction for me, I want to use eBay, to secure the transaction and to handle the whole process for us. Using eBay will secure the transaction and you will receive the car before I'll get paid and of course I'm also covered because the funds will be kept safety. You can see some pics on the following link from my personal page:
Let me know if you are interested.

Soon after we did a carfax, cost $30.00 bucks grrrrrr....everything seemed legit, (1) owner, purchased in California yada yada

We emailed him our name and address as he requested and he sent us the faux eBay invoice, on it had instructions for moneygram..it looked so real!!!

I tell ya, we were so close...if I had not listened to my gut this morning..My father would've been taken for 4600.00 dollars, it's truly heartbreaking what people do...my condolences for the people who got scammed, that really blows. I have been looking for a Jeep wrangler on: Autotrader; Autoshopper; Craig's List; and ebay. I never expected to encounter so many scammers. The typical approach by these 'sellers' has been to represent themselves as US servicemen overseas, or recently divorced and desperate for money to make a mortgage payment. On ebay, the strategy is 'hit and run'. Post early in the morning (US time) and then delete the listing after a few hours of trolling. Here is the e-mail I received from the latest ebay scammer I encountered. He deleted his posting, but I saved the page to my hard drive, and have reported the account he used to ebay. The account had a 100% rating. (They don't make it easy to report these things).

e-mail

Hello,
Thank you for your interest in my 2005 Jeep Wrangler RUBICON. I want you to know that I closed my auction earlier because someone has offered me the buy it now price, but didn't have all the money available.
Now the car is still available. Everything about this car functions perfectly. Incredible power, handling and reliability. If you are interested in buying, the price is $ 4,900 US .
I had to move with my family in UK where I got a new job transfer. I brought the car here with me but when I found out about the very high import duties and all the restrictions regarding right driving here I've decided to sell the vehicle. I want to sell it in US because is still registered there. It is made for US market and has US specs on it. The buyer will receive it along with all papers and receipts that he needs to register it in his name.

The transaction will be done through Ebay Motors for our own protection, no money first to me. I am registered with their secure trader department and they will handle the trade.
Your funds will be 100% insured by Ebay until you will receive and inspect the car, and I will be sure that I will receive the payment.
You will have 10 days from the time you receive the car to inspect it and decide if you want to keep it or not.

If you want to buy my car then e-mail me:
Full name for the title,
Shipping address

As soon as I have this information I'll start the official procedure, and eBay will notify you about this. You'll also receive important guidelines + instructions from them (please go through them exactly).
I'll handle the shipping, so this will be free of charge for you.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
Randall Mcluckie

end e-mail

Who falls for this stuff??...lol

Wow! I can't believe the number of people who have encountered this type of thing. I'm very thankful for this site and everyone's information.
I'm not sure if it's the same people, but a friend of mine seems to have stumbled upon a similar scheme for a boat (2004 Lund 1440-V Rebel Tiller). I googled the address of the "Vehicle Purchase Program Agent" from the email they were sent after inquiring and was directed here. The woman said the same thing as others seem to have been told - she's going through a divorce and yada yada yada. Fortunately they suspected it was too good to be true.

Saw an ad on craigslist today for a 2004 toyota 4-runner. An email came back to me with this:

The SUV has a clear title, excellent condition, no dents or scratches. No accidents involved or flood damage.
The SUV have 49,079 miles, year 2005, engine size is 4.0L V6, transmission is automatic, leather, 4x4.
Price is $4,500 and listed for a fast sale.
The SUV is located in Charleston, IL. I'm selling because of mortgage problems.
I am willing to ship the SUV for free because i have my brother-in-law working for DAS and will manage me a low cost shipping.

Does he think that I am an idiot or what?

I hope this comes up if the vehicle is searched.

Here you can find more pictures of the suv:http://s784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/chevrolet_lt_photo/

(if the above link does not work copy and paste it into a new web browser window).

The suv has been well taken care of, always kept in the garage. Flawless exterior/interior condition, no scratches and no dents. It has never been involved in an accident. The engine starts and drives like new and the paint looks great. It comes with US clear title which will be signed and notorized in the buyer's name. Have original manuals and all keys.

I'm an US Air Force Sgt. currently stationed in the United Kingdom. The suv is here with me. It was bought in the US and shipped to Europe, but it was never permanently registered here, the suv is still registered in the US. The suv is for sale locally as well, but there are slim chances of this to happen. In order to be able to register this suv here in the UK the buyer would have to pay very high import/custom taxes that will double the price. So I decided to sell the suv back in the US. The price is $4,750.00 US Dollars including shipping from the UK to the US and delivery to your home address. So if you decide to buy this suv or need further information please get back to me as soon as possible.

Thank you

Stopped me in time from making the scam purchase from Susan Miller on Craigslist...04 Jeep for 3400. Recived from her the following...

This is a confirmation mail regarding authenticity of Susan Miller Vehicle Purchase Protection membership.
The seller, started the transaction over the eBay Vehicle Purchase Program. eBay requires the payment to be done through Money Gram money transfer service to an Vehicle Purchase Protection Program verified agent.
You are receiving this e-mail because you are going to buy an item over the eBay Motors and your seller requested to use eBay Vehicle Protection Program. The eBay Motors vehicle protection programs offer a set of services that build protection into every step of the vehicle buying process. Some of the elements are automatically included when you buy a vehicle covered by the program element (not all elements are available for all vehicles) while some of the elements are available for a small fee. The eBay Motors vehicle protection program is your safety net in the rare occasion that something goes wrong.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. The seller and the buyer agree on the final amount of the transaction. 2. The buyer sends the payment to eBay. eBay informs the parts of the reception of the payment. 3. The seller sends the item to the purchaser knowing that the payment is validated by eBay. . 4. The seller inspect the item and authorizes the transfer of the money of the item by eBay with the seller. 5. The seller receives the payment from eBay.

With this Gypsy sounding name as ebay agent...

eBay Agent Details: Maria Bucur Radu
1044 Avila St. Spring Hill,
FL, 34608, United States.

Geez, not too comfortable she has my name and address.

Another one to watch for I found on Craig's List:

Robin Girard of Red Deer, AB, Canada e-mail address rgirard71@yahoo.com

e-mail address tracks back to California, and Red Deer has no phone listing or property ownership for a Robin Girard.
This one will break my 15 year old son's heart, as he thought he had found his dream truck, a 97 extended cab Ford Ranger with 82,000 miles on it for $2,000.

My "sniff meter" sounded off when the dude offered to ship it for free from Alberta Canada to Houston TX via DAS and handle the transaction through eBay.

Didn't get my money, but he hurt my son. I hope all his toes grow together!!

This was sent to me after I replied to a car on craigslist...I am assuming it is a scam

-----Original Message-----

You can find the car's pics here:
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2009-8/1345104/2105680
The vehicle is already at the shipping company, crated and ready to go from Reno, Nevada. I had another customer who said it will buy and after I made all the necessary arrangements in advance and paid for all shipping & handling fees, changed his mind because didn't have all the money. Look!!! This is why I need to ship it since all transportation charges have already been paid by me. Shipping may take anywhere between 3 to 4 business days depending on the destination. All documents you need for ownership, title, manuals and bill of sale will be provided along with the vehicle.
For the payment I would like to use eBay's Buyer Protection Plan as a third party. They will keep your money into a protection account until you get the vehicle and will release it to me after inspection period is over and you agree to keep the vehicle. So, this is not a blind transaction, you can see the vehicle before committing to buy and to eliminate any concerns you will have 10 days to inspect the vehicle. If you decide not to keep it eBay will refund you the money, no questions asked, and shipping back will be my concern. I think this is more than fair for both of us.
I'll start the official procedure, and eBay will contact you about this. If you are interested in buying it just mail me back with:
- Your Full Name and eBay user ID (optional) - Required by eBay (You'll receive important guidelines + instructions from them.)
- Your Shipping Address and Phone Number - Required by the Shipping company (They will call you with delivery/pickup instructions 1 day ahead so you can communicate what time schedule work best for you to receive the vehicle)
Again I want to point out that because I am going to Iraq this sale is my top priority and I am after a fast transaction, with no delays. That is why I decided to lower the price, to avoid wasting time with negotiations and find a buyer as soon as possible.
Thanks, hope to do business with you soon!

Does it strike anyone as wierd that all these cars seem to have a legitimate VIN and have about the same amount of miles and were somehow recently came of clear title? Does this mean there is an inside job with Carfax or some other service?

I bet this scam drove a ton of Carfax $29 reports. I paid for one.

WATCH OUT!

We almost just got caught. This person told us that she just divorced her husband and is living in the UK, the car is apparently in BC. We sent her agreement 'terms' to purchase the car, and they were all readily agreed to.... strange. We got as far as sending the seller our mailing address and phone number. Once the ebay 'purchase receipt' was sent to us - we knew it wasn't right. Here are the two last e-mails from the scammer:

Hi, The car will be delivered from Vancouver where is already at the shipping company (DAS) ready for shipping!,
I want to tell you that we will use eBay in this transaction in order for both of us to be 100% protected and insured by them, eBay will supervise this transaction so there won't be any problems. They will take care of the shipping (The car is already at the shipping company with all papers and documents ready to be shipped) and all the small details. You will get the car and you will have 15 calendar days of inspection in which you can decide if you buy the car or not. If you won't like my car (not your case) you will notify eBay and you will send the car back on my expense, if you want to keep it you will announce eBay you will send the founds (payment method and all the details will be set up by eBay) and you keep the car.
eBay will send you an invoice at your email in which you will see how to start the this transaction and in which you can see that this transaction is legit. Please get back to me with your FULL NAME & FULL ADDRESS and PHONE NUMBER so i can forward your details to eBay in order for you to receive your purchase invoice and if you will agree with what will find in the invoice will go from there,
If you will disagree with the transaction proposed by eBay, you can simply refuse to continue with the transaction and would be no problem, i still have a few offer's left.
Wait your reply

PS: Don't forget to send me your FULL NAME & FULL ADDRESS if you are really interested in this car.
And also I will need them for further collaboration regarding the transaction and better explanation of the whole process

The last one:

Hi, i totally agee with your terms!
Thanks for the info I am glad we can move on, I have already forwarded your information to eBay. I hope after receiving their notification you will go to the next step ASAP. After the arrival of the vehicle you will have a 15 days period to test the vehicle and if it is not satisfactory you can send it back (on my cost's) and you will receive a FULL REFUND NO QUESTIONS asked. You don`t have to pay any additional taxes. It will come with all the paperwork (warranty, insurance, etc.). Please let me know when you can send the payment to eBay, so I can be prepaid for shipping. Thank you again, Best Regards!

PS: There are no liens or loans on the vehicle! don't worry everything is in order and once you will receive your purchase invoice from eBay including
all Terms & Condition, with
all the instructions and details also all the steps showing you how to complete the transaction you will see that everything is legit and their eBay vehicle purchase protection program will safely insure us bout!

Best Regards!
And thank you for your purchase!

WOW - lucky we didn't go through with the payment part. We have since sent another e-mail asking for the phone number and seller's driver license - and have not heard back yet!

We have the banking deposit information for this person - DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO REPORT SUCH SCAMS?

Here is one that I replied to! Sounded fishy to me!

Hi there,

I am contacting you about the 2006 Honda Odyssey I had advertised for sale. I am very sorry for answering you so late but I just passed trough a divorce, and I just needed to take care of the final details such as the divorce settlement. I am very glad that I took the car, because it was my husband's most precious thing, his pride.

Here are a few details about the car:
it has 69,238 KM, automatic transmission, clean and clear ownership, runs good and looks very nice, It is a smoke free car, wonderful condition, it has been garage kept. It is dealer maintained only and it really shows up. Smooth shifting transmission, great engine too. Electrical systems are in perfect working order, certified and e-tested. The car has navigation system with DVD and TV, leather seats with lumbar control, heated front seats, power driver seat, power glass sunroof, power windows, cruise control, Dual-zone automatic climate control, CD player, speed-sensitive volume, 10-speaker sound system, it has a lot of airbags which I guess that makes it a very secure car, ABS, ESP, parking sensors.

The price I am asking for it is only $5,000(I taught to offer a discount for a faster sale). It may sound amazing, but it truly is an outstanding deal. I don't ask to much for the car because I just want to get rid of it ASAP, since the bastard used it to take his girlfriend out on dates. It is bad memory and I should get rid of it.

A totally rust, corrosion and flood free car. Never been in any accidents.Where are you located?
If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask!

Best Regards,
Kathleen Stanton

Hi again,

After telling me a little about your family I understand why you need a bigger vehicle and this van will be perfect for you. Please read my email carefully as you will find a lot of valuable information about how all things will go trough. I live in Yukon and I work from 9 AM to 9 PM and as you can see I am having a lot of problems solving my personal issues, my new job got me a lot of extra hours so for that I needed to take a lot of extra hours therefore eBay is the best solution for me. As far as I know the eBay transaction works like this: You need to send me your FULL NAME, shipping ADDRESS and PHONE number, I will forward them to eBay so we can initiate our transaction with them; after the transaction will be initiated we will both receive further instructions about the transaction including payment invoice and bill of sale, you will need to pay to eBay, eBay will give me the shipping instructions, I will ship the car over to your address, you will receive the car and then you will have 5 days in which to inspect the car, drive it and check its documents before actually deciding to keep the car. During all this time eBay will hold the money. If you are satisfied with the car and decide to keep it you inform eBay about this and they will release the money to me. If the car is not as I described it and you will decide not to keep it eBay will refund you the payment in full, no questions asked, and shipping back the car will be my concern. Please take into consideration that I will get paid only after you receive the car and make sure everything is as agreed. I think this is fair for the both of us.

Kindly,
Kathleen

P.S. I don't think you need to worry about the shipping because eBay quoted me with a great price offer trough one of their trusted companies and I decided to include the shipping in the car's price.

Ah!!! Thank you all so much for posting this!!! I just cashed out some money from savings for a car I thought was an awesome deal - too good to be true - and then did some research - word for word what you all are posting! I would have been sick to my stomach!! Thank you! Thank you!!

Juanita Castello worked on a boat as a card dealer and needed to get rid of the car because she didn't need it. I found this ad on Craigslist and asked to come see it. I received all this information and it was TOO GOOD to be TRUE! Thanks! More people need to be aware of these scammers. I just wander what they do if they get your name and address. Crazy.

Hello,

I have to tell you that I'm currently at work. As I already told you, I work as a dealer on a cruise ship and I left the car in California at the shipping company. It's already packed and waiting to be shipped anywhere. You will receive all the documents of the car (owner's manuals, keys, clear title, bill of sale) in order to register it under your name. If you are interested to purchase the car, I have done some researching and the best way to close the deal is through eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection Program. The transaction fits the Vehicle Protection plan and will be covered by eBay. Vehicle Purchase Protection reimburses buyers who are involved in a vehicle transaction through their program. The program provides reimbursement for all the situations that can appear in a transaction. The money will be sent to an eBay agent. After the payment is confirmed and secured by eBay I will start the shipping. The car will be in front at your door in max 3 days. From the moment you receive the car you have a 5 days inspection period. After the 5 days you have to decide if you want to keep the car or not. If you'll keep it, the payment will be released to me. In case you will not like the car and decide not to keep it, you will have to ship it back and you will be fully refunded. If you agree I will need your full name and complete shipping address and your phone#

pretty much this a scam... The two emails are:::

I am selling this car because my platoon has been sent back to Iraq and don't want it get old in my backyard. The price is low because I need to sell it before October 3rd. It has no damage, no scratches or dents, no hidden defects. It is in immaculate condition, meticulously maintained and hasn't been involved in any accident...I do have the title, clear, under my name. The car has 51,842 original miles VIN# 1N4BA41E85C852616.
It is still available for sale if interested, price as stated in the ad $3,500. The car is in Springfield, Illinois, in case it gets sold I will take care of shipping. Let me know if you are interested, email back.

And also:::

Hi again,
As I've told you at this moment I am in IL in a military base getting ready for Iraq (I hope for the last time). I`m doing a special training program each day and I am not allowed to get out of the unit or give calls whenever I want. The shipping is not a problem because a have considerable discount from eBay and I can do it at no cost for you. You will receive the car along with all the documents including title, bill of sale, 2 set of keys, full service records and more . Because it is a large transaction we will complete the deal only using an authorized third part like eBay coz I already prearranged the whole process with them, using their escrow Safe Pay Program. The car is located in their warehouse in Springfield, IL (ready for delivery). I've asked them to allow viewers to go there and inspect the car but their reply was: "We are not a showroom!" In this case I will offer a 5 days period to inspect the car from the moment you receive it, before I'll have your money. I think this is more than fair for both of us.
The payment will be handling by eBay Escrow, and you will benefit of 5 days inspection time period (test drive) and the option to accept or reject the car on my expense. If you are still interested just send me your full name and shipping address. I will forward your info to eBay and they will notify you about our deal. Like this you'll be able to talk with them directly and ask all you want to know.
Regards!!

So when in doubt, just copy the message and put it in a search and if that same message shows up somewhere else, its a scam.

Hi XYZ ,

My hope for today is definitely to post the vehicle on eBay and email you the URL link to click "Buy it Now" option .

The transaction will be fully under eBay's surveillance, giving us both security and insurance that nothing will go wrong. They will be the 3rd, objective party involved in the transaction. This way you will actually pay for the car after you will receive and test it, because eBay will hold the funds in an escrow account and release it to me only after you accept and confirm the delivery. After the car reaches your address you will have 7 days to test it. Within this period you have to decide if you purchase it or not. If you decide to take it you will have to contact eBay and let them know that, so they can release the payment to me. If you won't like it you will have to ship it back to me within the 7 days and eBay will refund you. The shipping back will be
done on my own expense, but I am sure this will not be the case.

If you decide to buy the car ,please include the following information in your next email.

1. Ship to name and address ( the complete name and address of the person receiving the car ).
2. Motor vehicle registration name and address needed for title transfer, this would be your complete name and physical address (or if the car is to be registered on someone else's name the name and address of the registrant is needed).

Please get back to me at your earliest convenience.

Too good to be true? This scam found me on Craigslist for a John Deere tractor for $4750! The tractor (with lots of accesories)should have been over $20K. Felicia Pearson (or was that Fleece a person?)was the seller. The emails purportedly from ebay looked real. This blog helped pull me from the scam! Thanks. Be careful out there!

I checked out a 1967 Corvette listed for $13,500 on AutoTrader. I knew this had to be too good to be true since they average $125,000! I emailed him anyway and got the normal line that I've read here. He stated he lived in Wheaton,IL and he would ship the car to me at his expense. I had five days to inspect it and decide if I wanted the car. This really sounded crazy that he would just let me have the car for five days to inspect. I asked him twice for a phone number so I could call him,but he ignored the requests. He asked me to wire the money to eBay Motors Inc. at Chase Bank in Atlanta, Ga and gave me a name of Isaac Williams, Business Development Manager, and an account number 817-683-790. I checked out the bank and there is no Chase bank at that address and I doubt that Isaac Williams works there! Then I checked George Weaver's address, the seller, in Illinois. Surprise, he doesn't live there either so I'm pretty darn sure he doesn't own a 1967 Corvette. I e-mailed him and told him I would come to see the car in Illionis and save him the shipping charges! Haven't heard from him since. I hope someday that this idiot gets caught. I'd like t be there when he is.

I have got very similar this time from Australia. Last weekend I've lost $14800 for 2006 Beetle with 43000km. Very good price, so I wanted it very much. The car was advertised on carsales.com.au, but the seller wanted to close the transaction through eBay VPP. He asked me for my name, delivery address and eBay ID name. I've provided everything to him. He said that the car is already with the shipping company and he is away on business trip and need money to pay off some debt and he is in the country without the phone. He said the eBay invoice will come to me and I will need to pay money to the account of the eBay secured agent, mr Kostas Mihailidis. After the payment the car will be shipped to me and I will have 5 days to inspect this beautiful car. I've paid and then I started to check his information. Contacted eBay and found out, that they do not have any secured account. They only deal through PayPal. I have sent the eBay invoice to them and they told me, that it is fraud. Only few hours too late. I've contacted the bank, but could not get the money back. I went to the police, lodged the report and this is it. The seller is gone, my money are gone and I can not believe how stupid I feela, as l deal with ebay a lot, why not checking the information before depositing money?? No idea. I am hoping that writing this will help more people to know about these scumbags. The warnings are everywhere, but seldom we read a small print. I hope, that police will one day got to them. WHEW! Same thing happend to me and my boyfriend. Same illegit email, but I had taken the cash out and everything. Went to the walmart on three different occasions everytime there was a problem with by debit card. I fixed the issue with my debit card and went this morning and the lady at wal mart questioned me and asked if I was sure I wanted to send this much money to somebody's home address. I looked at my boyfirend he looked unsure and I was unsure and said look let me check this out. I got online with an email rep and she strongly urged me to no longer do interact with this person and to
forward the email to spoof@ebay.com. Thank God my debit card did not work because I would have been scammed!

Hi,
I'm Laura Campbell, you inquired about my 2004 Volkswagen Jetta GLI.I apologize for the delay, recently I had to move in London, United Kingdom (for a few months) with my job and that's why I couldn't reply in time.Anyway, if you are still interested in buying it, I'm asking $3,300.I am selling it so cheap because I am about to lose my house if I don't pay the mortgage ASAP.It has a clean title, very well maintained, always garage kept, no rust, excellent condition, runs and sounds 100% perfect with no leaks or noises.Because I am out of country and I don't have someone in US to handle the transaction for me, I want to use eBay, to secure the transaction and to handle the whole process for us.Using eBay will secure the transaction and you will receive the car before I'll get paid and of course I'm also covered because the funds will be kept safety. The car is located at a shipping company in US and is ready for shipping (I will support the shipping). You can see more photos here: http://picasaweb.google.com/j8rk55/Jetta
Let me know if you are interested.

I will only deal through eBay for our own protection, they will hold and insure your money until the receipt of the vehicle in good condition. A 15 days inspection period will start from the day you will receive the vehicle, in this time you must inspect it and complete the transaction.
I'm a private seller and this is my personal vehicle. I'm the original owner.
I am selling it under market value as I need the funds for a major investment. I am involved in a real estate project in United Kingdom. I recently moved to Manchester, UK with my family because I received a better job offer.

-non-smoker, garage kept.
-actual kilometres: 69,513.
-the vehicle has a clear title(no lien). I have the title in hand.
-it is Certified and E-Tested
-the vehicle is in showroom conditions inside and out.
-there are no dimples, dents or scratches of any kind, normal usage.
-exterior and interior are in a very good shape.
-the vehicle drives and looks brand new and has an incident free history.
-owner manual and service records available.

-the transmission is automatic.
-the paint is original.

The vehicle is registered in Whitehorse, YT and you will inspect the vehicle before the payment will be made. The car is located at 382 Main Street, Whitehorse, YT Y1A 2B6.
I assure you, the vehicle is in excellent shape, doesn't need any work.
If you are absolutely interested to purchase it you must provide me with your full name and shipping address so I can register the deal with eBay.

Same Scam happened to me. Glad I saw this site. Jerry Mandinson posted a 2005 BMW CI for $10,100. He had to move because of his job to Las Vegas. Said he would ship the car up for free through eBay. I asked him if I could use PayPal and I am still waiting for a response.

Hello,
Thank you for contacted for my car:2005 Bmw 330 CI wich is posted for sale..The car is accurate, corosion free, no scratches, no damage of any kind, was properly serviced and stored, all the manuals and the original documents, only 73,000 km,never been involved in any accident. The car is always garaged and rarely used, is registered in Canada and it has clear title. The problem is that I had to move with my family in United States where I got a new job transfer (i work as a doctor). I brought the car here with me with the intention of driving it but when I found out about the very high import duties and all the restrictions regarding registration and emissions tests here I've changed my mind and I've decided to sell the vehicle.I want to sell it in Canada because is still registered there.Total price with shipping included is $10,000CAD!I know the price is cheaper then normal on the market but I want to sell the car faster then usually and I assume that a lower price will be a good solution.

I was suspicious about this but I emailed anyway. I found similar responses in this blog. Thanks for confirmation!

From donna.garnett1@gmail.com:

Hi I'm Donna,

The 2007 BMW X5 is still for sale. It is in perfect shape. It has no scratches, dents and it was never involved in any accidents. It has 34,130 km. The title is clear. My final price is $15,500. I am forced to sell quickly because I need money to pay the mortgage on my house.
I already have tons of emails so I hope you understand that I need to sort them out. I will take in consideration only those buyers who are really interested in buying the car, to be sure that I don't waste my time with endless discussions. This way, I shall be assured of the serious intentions.Thank you.

P.S. I already listed it on eBay at buy it now price $15,500 so you can purchase it there. That way you will receive assistance for the purchase, paperwork, title transfer and an extended warranty. They also are guaranteeing purchases up to $ 20,000 so we will both be protected.

Hi all,
This boat listing is too good to be true, and the verbiage is very similar.

When I said I would pickup the boat with my truck, he insisted to ship me the boat, then it magically moved from Orlando to New Jersey and he would pay for shipping. Email is "adamwebx@gmail.com" Check this out:

"Hello,
Sorry for mailing you so late!
I'm glad that you're interested in my boat. The boat is in good condition, has no technical damages at all, no scratches or dents,no hidden defects. The boat has been looked after very well - washed and cleaned every two weeks. The interior is in virtually spotless condition. The seats are clean and not torn. The exterior is in excellent condition. It comes with all the documents needed for registration, it has a clear title and it can be registered into your name at any time. There are no known problems with the boat as far as I know.
The total price is $8,900 including shipping and delivery taxes to your address.
I AM SELLING UNDER THE MARKET'S VALUE BECAUSE I NEED LIQUIDITY IN ORDER TO FINISH THE HOUSE THAT I AM BUILDING.
If you are decided we are going to have a safe deal.
Please get back to me to explain you more.
I`m waiting for your reply as soon as possible.
Thank you! "

THEN...

"I'm in New Jersey due to my work (i'm an Air Force Msgt.) and i have the boat here with me. I can deliver it to your shipping address (i will pay for the shipping and insurance fees) and i will agree to let you test and inspect it for 5 days just to be sure. In this 5 days you will test the conditions of the boat . If something won't be like you expected to be you can return it without any expense. It will come with all the paper work. The payment will be made after you will test and inspect the boat.

The deal will go through eBay Motors. In this way both of us will have the required assurance that the deal will take place well. A refund policy will be included.
If you agree with these terms please reply me with your full name, shipping address and phone# so that i can forward them to eBay. They will send you a complete list with instructions.
I`m waiting for your reply as soon as possible. Thanks"

This one is going on now - ad is still current - beware!

The email I received said...

"Let us give you all the details about this transaction and how do they work.
First you have to make the payment to eBay Motors Representative. Once they check the payment if everything is alright, they will notify us to proceed with the shipping. Once you receive the car, you got 15 days for inspection. After 15 days if you agree to keep it you will have to notify eBay to release the payment to us, if you don't like the car, the shipping agency will take the car back on our costs and eBay will refund you, but I am sure you will love the car and this won't happen. This way you will see and inspect the car before we get paid. eBay actually holds the money until the buyer is satisfied with the merchandise.
It's also a fair way to complete online deals.

To start this transaction please e-mail us your complete delivery address and full name.
We will forward them to eBay and they will contact you after they open a case."

This is very entertaining. If only I could make a living turning these bastards in. Heres mine for the record.

I found the 72 VW Westfalia in the Los Angeles craigslist. When I emailed her she said that she and her husband had recently moved to Omaha, Nebraska for work and their employer purchased them a vehicle so they don't need the VW anymore.

That was what gave it away. What Westy owner gives up a fully original classic for WAY under market value? I've known people to eat ramen day in and out to keep theirs. Funny.

I replied and gave her my work address, then recieved the eBay scam email.

I offered to fly out and pay cash next day, but that wasn't good enough. Its too bad, cause I was kinda looking forward to a road trip : )

she is
Alice Ferton
aliceferton@gmail.com

....at least for now.

I am supposed to be sending my payment to Thomas Denton in Miami, FL

She is using the eBay scam, and has been reported to eBay. I wish we could hang these guys by their toes, cover em in honey and dip them in fire ants.

This posting is fairly old, but just yesterday, 11/20/09, I almost fell for the same scam. Here's the email I received:

"The Acura TL with only 50,850 miles is in great shape, no engine problems, damages or hidden defects. It was always garaged and never kept outside. I`m a single mother with 2 children because I divorced with my husband and after the divorce I own this car, I don`t need it and that`s why I`m selling it so cheap. The price for the car is $4600 with shipping included. We will use eBay`s protection program for our safety. I just need your full name and address so i can open a case.(with no further obligation or fees)."

Upon further questioning, I received this response:
"Hello there,
I received your email with all information requested ... I will have the deal registered with eBay in a few minutes. You should be contacted by one of eBay employee's with all steps necesary for you in order to have your part of this transaction completed soon. I will do my best for this deal, hope you'll do the same.
The Acura is already at the shipping company in Scottsdale, AZ, sealed and ready for the shipping.
Here you can see more pics with the car: http://sites.google.com/a/lperr.net/mariabrown/Home
VIN: 19UUA66225A063095

Sincerely,
Maria Brown

P.S: Please also send me a note right after you will receive your invoice for this purchase"

"Hi,
If you have any question about the deal please reply to the ebay invoice email and ask them.
Now you will have to go to any Moneygram office and tell them that you want to send some money. At the sender you will put your name and address and at the receiver the ebay agent name and address. after the transaction is complete you will receive a receipt. After that you will have to fax the receipt to ebay. You have the ebay agent name and address and the fax number on the ebay invoice email.
After ebay will confirm me that you have made the payment.. I will start the shipping.
In 3-4 days you will receive the car and from that moment you will have 5 days to test and inspect it. If you don`t like it You will receive all your money back. if you want to buy it you will tell ebay to send me the money. In this way we are both protected."

Luckily I poked around on the internet enough to see that it was a scam. I emailed "Maria" and told her i wasnt interested, haven't heard a word since and the posting was removed from craigslist as soon as i sent my initial email requesting more info.
